Chapter Ten: Being Rushed

Standing in the middle of his room was the god of funerals. Anubis stood watching him with his arms crossed. This time he appeared with a jackal head and a dark grey robe, a golden collar rested on his shoulders and draped across his chest. Neither boys moved, Nico glared at Anubis, while Anubis calming stared back. They both waited. The air between them turned dark and dangerous, as if something would go click and they'd be at each other's throat.

After what seemed like hours, Anubis spoke up. "Have you thought about my offer?" His jackal mouth moved in an unusually human way.

"I just got here and now I have school to think about. You'd think I would have time to think about that?" he spat.

Anubis growl. "I came here to remind you. You'd better make a decision quickly because time is running out."

Nico blinked. "What do you mean time is running out?"

"You know what I mean. The prophecy that you read this morning, it's going to take its course very soon. I can help, if you'd just become my host." Anubis replied.

Nico shook his head defiantly. "I've been through a lot of things on my own. I think I can manage another prophecy," he said. "Without your godly assistance."

Anubis's eyes glowed red. "We'll see about that, Di Angelo. If you need my help, or have reconsidered my offer, you know where to find me." With that he disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Nico relaxed. He didn't want to share control of himself, and he most certainly didn't need the help of a god. He thought about what Anubis said though. Could the prophecy actually be taking its course, or could Anubis be lying.

He shook those thoughts to the back of his mind. Then he walked over and started to pack his bag for school, which wouldn't start until the next week. He finished packing just as someone started rapping on his door. He opened the door to find two people standing there, Carter and Sadie.

"Hey, Nico. Can we come inside?" Carter asked.

Nico nodded. Sadie sat on the bed while Carter took a seat on the floor beside it.

"I spoke with Annabeth this morning after our meeting. She said that she has a cousin who live in Boston." Carter said.

"So do we go to Boston, then?" Sadie asked.

Carter shook his head. "We won't know where to go, besides Annabeth said that we can scour the whole city and still won't be able to find him."

Nico considered the idea of going to Boston. "I can't believe she didn't tell me this. I think we should go to Boston and at least try to find him."

Sadie looked at him suspiciously. "Why are you in such a hurry?"

"Nothing," Nico lied. He didn't want to tell them about what Anubis had said. "I just think that we should get a start, so we'll be prepared for when the prophecy does take place."

Carter nodded. "It seems like a good idea. Maybe Annabeth can take us there."

"But doesn't she have college to attend to?" Sadie butted in.

"She's a daughter of Athena, I'm sure missing a week of school won't affect her at all." Nico said.

Carter pulled a slip of paper from his pocket. "Zia thinks that they might be the escaped souls. I've been reading up on afterlifes from all sorts of places in the north. The Vikings believed that if you died a warrior, you would be taken to either Valhalla or Folkvanger. That is if a Valkyrie is around to see you die. When they go to these places they get a second life, they live again only to die again during the end of the world."

"So their escaped souls because they didn't actually die, they got another life," Nico summed up.

"There's Romans in the west, Egyptians in the south, Vikings in the north, and at the center we have Greeks." Sadie noted.

"Since we have school next week, I'm going to convince Annabeth to take us there this week, and hopefully we'll get back before school starts." Carter said.

"Good idea. By the way, where is Zia?" Sadie asked.

Carter sighed. "She's back in Egypt. Amos needs her help in the House of Life."

Sadie nodded. "Let's get dinner, I'm starving."

Everyone agreed on that. They went to the terrace, most of the other magicians were already there.
