Charlotte sat side by side with Blaine at a round table inside of Breadstix, listening to Kurt's passionate rambling.
While Elliott sat beside him paying just as much attention to the conversation as the other two, Mercedes sipped on her drink with her eyes glued to the table. As much as Kurt and Charlotte had attempted to convince her to come out to dinner with Anthony, Mercedes had stubbornly refused. Instead, she had unwisely elected to join the four without a friend or a date. As the minutes ticked away, she was beginning to strongly regret doing so.
"I'm just saying that drunk people who get married to someone they met an hour ago by an Elvis impersonator," Kurt rushed, glancing from Elliott to Blaine with wide eyes, "that's a bigger insult to marriage than two gay guys getting hitched." Charlotte nodded in agreement, her eyes on Blaine as she sipped her drink.
"Totally," Blaine agreed, looking between Kurt and Charlotte beside him as he spoke. "It's, like, if marriage is so sacred, they should just outlaw divorce."
Elliott chuckled. "Oh please. Marriage wouldn't stand a chance if they took away divorce, AKA the universal safety net."
"Right, right?" Kurt smiled, patting the table in front of Elliott in mutual agreeance as Charlotte's brother nodded.
Charlotte smiled as they all lightly laughed together. Although she wasn't bi or gay like Blaine and Kurt, she was enjoying the conversation that Kurt had dragged them all into; to her surprise, Elliott appeared to be enjoying it, too. "I have to admit, you guys are making some valid points," she laughed, lifting her hands in surrender as Blaine grinned at her and Kurt and Elliott swapped amused looks. "But now you're just scaring me out of marriage altogether." The three boys laughed at her once again; under the table, she felt Blaine's hand grab her own, which had been resting against her leg. It took her a little by surprise at first, but ever since their coffee date (she assumed that she could call it that at this point), he had been so sweet to her that she didn't even care. Her eyes found his hazel ones when she looked back at him, smiling wide.
Blaine, noticing Mercedes' exclusion from the conversation, turned to the girl graciously. "What do you think, Mercedes?"
Looking up from her drink, she squeezed her eyes shut before opening them again to the group. "Oh, about 'don't ask, don't tell'?"
Kurt picked up his drink, glancing from the other three to Mercedes. "No, we're on Prop 8 now," he informed her with a smile and a nod.
Mercedes shook her head before widening her eyes and pasting on a smile. "Totally for it!"
"Against it," Charlotte mumbled to her helpfully.
"All right," Mercedes agreed uncomfortably, showing off her smile to Charlotte and then the other three. She shook her head apologetically. "I'm sorry. I kind of just blanked out."
