"I- uh... I called to say it happened. I don't want you to know about this from the news. Me and Irina split up."
Gaga hears his voice and cannot distinguish what he's feeling. She was shocked, sad and relieved.
"B, you okay?"
"I've been better. I'm just confused..." He pauses and Stefani hears his quiet breathing. "We're deciding how we're going to move forward with all this..."
"Right... I hope everything goes well." A slight thoughtful smile appears on her lips. "And thanks for letting me know in advance."
The two are silent for a while. That whole time without talking to each other made them afraid to express themselves more than they could.
"Hey, I know this can be coming from nowhere but can I come over?"
"Uh... I- yeah. Yeah, sure..." She responds without hesitating. "Why not?"
"I mean, it's not that I want things to happen fast... it's just that I feel that if I spent one more minute in this house I'll go crazy. I don't want you to think that I... "
"B, stop" she interrupts him. "It's okay. You just want to talk and get some fresh air. I'll make you something to eat while you drive here. See you soon?"
"Thanks, Stef. I'm on my way."
Bradley just takes his car key and takes his 15 minutes to think while driving.
He knows that what he's doing is a mistake. Stefani knows that what she is doing is a mistake.
They both know it's too early for them to meet, they aren't ready to face each other again. But oh, how they want to.
Stefani makes no effort to dress up for Bradley and is shocked to remember that she's wearing the brown Jackson Maine shirt that she brought home as a souvenir from the film.
Bradley takes a deep breath and knocks on the door. A few seconds later Stefani receives him with a beautiful smile.
"Hi." He clears his throat and smiles back. Stefani pulls him into the house and she allows herself to hug him only after closing the door. The fear that someone else might have registered his arrival at her house terrifies her until that moment.
"Hi." She breathes the perfume on his neck in relief. Bradley feels like he doesn't care if the sky falls outside while he hugs her tight around the waist. "You okay?"
Stefani cups his face with her hands attentively absorbing his facial expressions. With that, she realizes how much he has changed in a few months.
"I'm good." It's the only thing he answers. "You look beautiful wearing my shirt."
"I wear it when I miss you." She guides him to the back of the house as they start talking about random subjects like the weather and the traffic, and before long they are already laughing as if nothing has changed.
The day was going by and they realized how beautiful the sky was, ready for a beautiful sunset as if it had waited for a long time to make that show for them.
"Wait, we must cross the field and relax watching the sea as the sun goes down." Stefani's face shines as she shares her idea with him. She takes her glass of wine and Bradley follows her with her dogs.
They sit in the tall grass and enjoy the beach and cars passing on the street with drivers without even paying attention to them. They take a deep breath feeling like normal people. The dogs run and play around them.
"So, what did you do in those two months?" Bradley asks, laying his back on the grass, inhaling the scent of weeds.
"Well... I wrote some songs and worked on them in the studio." Stefani takes a sip of the wine and relaxes by lying with her elbows on the floor, facing Bradley. He watches her closely.
"With Mark?"
"No, he's busy with other stuff... Actually I've been working a lot with Dan ..."
"Oh..." Bradley shows surprise looking at her. She looks down at the grass for a moment and giggles.
"We're kinda having a thing, nothing serious though." Stefani shrugs trying to be casual.
Bradley nods and watches the sunset. How much have they changed? Could she still be his? Something was telling him no. He already felt defeat even though Stefani had said nothing.
"Don't expect me to wait for you while you sleep with Irina every night." She lets go at once, noticing his sile
nce. "It wasn't easy to pretend you didn't exist. I needed someone to keep me from feeling lonely and thinking about you." She takes a deep breath and clears her throat by taking another sip of wine. "Which was pretty stupid because when I was with him, it was exactly you I was thinking about." She giggles, nervous and embarrassed.
"Nothing serious, then?"
"Yeah... but why the question?" She tilts her head. "Is it like we have something?"
"And don't we?" He stares at her, defusing any defense she has prepared for that conversation. "Because I also spent all this time thinking about you."
"And it seems like you've been trough hell, Mr. Cooper."
"Well, how do you think I would be, sleeping with one person thinking about another? I mean, I'm sure that's not heaven at all."
Stefani breathes the tide breeze that messes her hair and pluck a grass from the ground.
"Sometimes I wonder what she told you to make you stay." She thinks out loud.
"She wanted to leak our photos. We tried to fix things, but in the end we were totally different people." He says as if he doesn't want to continue the conversation, taking a lock of hair from Stefani's face and putting it behind her ear.
"So she's the past now?" She asks, still thinking out loud again, staring at him.
"I hope so." He smiled. "I want you."
They exchange glances long enough to know that the feeling is mutual.
"Alright, Mr. Cooper. I get you." Stefani says embarrassed, looking away at the sunset, wondering if she was ready for him.
The sky begins to change to a shade of dark blue and they decide to go back inside. Stefani had already drunk enough to feel lighter, enjoying the loose conversation with Bradley.
"Fuck... why something's telling me I'm going to regret this tomorrow?" Stefani asks when being spun by Bradley in the middle of the living room, after they have dinner and a nice jazz rhythm's playing in the background while they dance together.
"'Cause I think this is how it works for us." He responds touching the top of her head with his smiling lips. His arms around her waist, she guiding his steps in a slow dance.
"Let me tell you one more thing." She murmurs, caressing his arms up to his neck, where she hugs him staring at his eyes. "I get really naughty when I listen to jazz." Stefani chuckles and closes her eyes, tilting her head to the ceiling, feeling the trumpet notes touch her soul.
She hears Bradley's laughter bending over and touching her cheek with his chin, his beard tickling Stefani pleasurably. He kisses her on the cheek and his hand moves to grab her face.
She takes a deep breath feeling her skin crawl, and opens her eyes again. She looks at him with parted lips and pupils full of desire, and he knows that he will be forever lost in her. She was begging, he could feel it as she pressed her body against his and tiptoed to reach him, allowing him to take her for himself. And he couldn't wait.
Their lips touched and they both sighed in the other's mouth, the urge to rediscover themselves intimately screaming in that slow kiss. Bradley didn't drink, but tasting wine in her mouth was priceless.
For them, if that wasn't paradise, they didn't know what it was anymore.
