"We're home."

Virgil signed to the shorter. Letting out a breath, he stared at the old and molding house. The two had just got back from school, or more so Virgil skipped and had to pick Logan up. It wasn't unusual, the teen just easily got bored.

The younger frowned. School was his safe place and without it, he felt exposed, vulnerable. An easy target. Sure, he had his older brother and yes, he did feel safe with him. But the walls of a classroom gave him a different feeling of safety, one that he could easily relax into and trust with everything he had.

So, maybe he did absolutely adore school.

Virgil chewed on his bottom lip, praying the man they knew as their father wasn't home. It had been a few days since the night Logan obtained the bruise on his arm and Virgil, being highly protective of the only family he has left, just couldn't seem to let it go.

And, well, he has every right not to.

The brothers finally found their will to walk into the house, the smell of booze strong upon entering. Luckily though, the alcohol drinking man wasn't home.

Kicking off his shoes and putting everything neatly into their spot, Virgil sat Logan on the kitchen counter while he cut up apple slices for the child. He hummed as he did so, tapping his foot.

The five year old boy tilted his head as he watched the teen. "Why are you doing that?" he asked after getting the others attention.

"Doing what?"

Logan huffed, motioning to the slightly dancing boy. "That."

Putting the slices into a bowl, the boy in question chuckled. "Because I can. Now eat."

With a sigh, Logan took the bowl and thanked him before munching on the snack. A comfortable silence filled the space between them until Logan had noticed his brother deep in thought. Furrowing his eyebrows in confusion, he waved a hand in front of the anxious boys face.

Virgil only offered him a glance, humming in acknowledgement as his focus went back to the white counter before him. "What are you thinking about?"

"Something."

"Tell me."

"Logan-"

"Virgil."

In response to being cut off, said boy gave the other an unimpressed look before giving in. "I... I was just thinking about... the future."

Logan crossed his legs, sitting comfortably on the counter, the bowl placed neatly in his lap. "What about the future?" he asked, his eyebrow raised and looking more like a suspicious mother than a five year old boy.

Virgil shrugged, avoiding the youngers gaze. "I've been planning to... well, make a plan. But I need your help. You and a friend, anyway. So? Are you willing to help?"

"Depends. What's the plan about?" the nerd signed suspiciously, knowing where this was going but wanting to confirm.

"Well. I think you and your big brain already know, but... we've gotta get out of here, Logan. I can't let him hurt you any further."

Logan swallowed thickly, the lump in his throat only growing at the memory. Shaking his head, he willed the tears away and avoided eye contact as to keep control over his childish emotions.

"You know we can't do that, Virgil. If we get caught, you said they'd take us away and we'll never see each other again and we'll be forced into different families and... and-"

Being cut off was never favored by the child, but as he felt warm and gentle hands coming to hold his own, he couldn't help but feel grateful. However, he hadn't noticed his vision blurring and his eyes glossing over.

Virgil frowned, bringing the boys hands closer to his own body. He squeezed them before placing them on his chest and humming. The vibrations offered Logan the comfort he was longing for. It wasn't often he needed it, but the thought of being away from Virgil alone was too much to handle.

Setting aside the almost finished bowl of apples, the teen pulled the other into a hug.

"I don't want to be alone, Vv. I want you."

And with those words alone, Virgil could have dashed out of the door and ran with Logan in his arms forever.

"I'm not going anywhere, Einstein. I'll always be here for you."

Maybe it was the trust the two had built up over the years. Or maybe it was just brotherly instinct to do so.

But Logan believed him whole heartedly.
