someday, the girl. ━CHAPTER FIVE, wishes and promises always come true.
ESME AWOKE TO ARTOO BEEPING AND PADMÉ SHAKING HER. Esme groaned, turning over and shoving her face into her pillow. "Get up!" Padmé said. "Aunt Lori let me in and told you to get ready, Anakin's race is today!" Esme shot up.
"Padmé, you should've just started out with that!" Artoo chirped happily and Esme made a face at him. "Yeah, yeah, laugh it up Artoo. Now both of you get out while I'm getting ready, I'll be a minute."
Padmé shook her head, laughing. "Come on, Artoo. Let's give Esme some privacy." Artoo and Padmé left Esme alone in her room while she got ready. Esme began to braid her hair, sighing when she kept messing up.
"Padmé?" Esme called out. Padmé entered her room and shook her head with a smile. "Sit." Esme sat down on the edge of her bed and the young Queen moved to sit behind her, brushing through the mess of blonde hair that belonged to Esme.
"Did you even brush it?"
"Did I even brush it—yes, of course I brushed it. I just messed it up when I was trying to braid my hair."
Padmé sighed and began to braid her hair. "So . . ."
"So?"
"What's up with you and Anakin? I thought you didn't want to be with anyone because that means your mother will find you someone for you to marry."
Esme sighed. "I don't know . . . I just feel such a strong connection to him it's astounding. He's unlike anyone I've ever met before. I don't have to say anything, and he understands what I'm thinking. It's so . . . odd." Padmé hums in agreement.
"I have to agree; it is odd. But I haven't seen you this carefree since we were little girls who didn't have to worry about the throne." Esme lets out a humorless laugh.
"Do you ever . . . wish it was different?"
"Oh, all the time. I've considered stepping down from the throne or not running for my next term as Queen." Esme whirled around, ignoring Padmé's whines of Esme, I wasn't even done! and Esme, I was doing such a good job! Esme was too excited to care.
"My father says I should abdicate. My Mother wants me to become Queen, not me. And, and if we both leave the throne behind and you become a Senator like I know you want to, and I do whatever Fate tells me to, then, then maybe we'll feel free again."
Padmé stared at Esme before beginning to laugh. "Turn around, Esme, let me finish your braids. We can worry about all of that when we're off this planet." Esme did as she was told, her heart pounding in her chest.
