Nick's POV

I was using the upstairs bathroom, mostly just to get away from everyone and everything, when I heard a high pitched scream.

"Nick!" It sounded like Mae. Her scream was followed with a loud bang, like a body being slammed against a door.

I opened the bathroom door running out as I followed the muffled whimpers from Mae.

"Mae?! Where are you?!" If anything happens to her I swear I won't be able to live with myself. I think I had checked every door but two at the end of the hall when I saw the door knob jiggle. I ran for it and tried to open it but it was locked.

"Mae?! Open the door!" I heard something snap and my heart dropped to the bottom of my stomach. Taking a few steps back, I kicked the door knob as hard as I could and it sprung open. Mae was curled up in the corner of the room with a man trying to force himself on her.

"Get the fuck away from her. You're hurting her!" He was taller than me and probably stronger. I didn't care at this point; I was livid. I gripped his shoulder turning him to face me and punched his jaw, hard. He stumbled backwards and it was enough for me to shield Mae's body with my own. The man stood up and came towards me but Zion came crashing into the room distracting him.

I kicked his knee hard and it buckled, sending him into a heap on the floor. Zion looked at me with fear in his eyes, I've never seen him like that.

"Take her to the hospital, Nick! I'll take care of everything here."

I scooped Mae up and carried her bridal style all the way outside to my car. She had tears streaming down her face and dried blood patches. I could already see bruises forming. I placed Mae gently in the passenger seat and sped off to the hospital. I didn't even care about a speed limit.

I looked over at Mae to see her already looking at me. There was something in her eyes that I couldn't quite decipher. I reached for her hand and intertwined her fingers with mine, placing gentle kisses to each of her knuckles.

"You're safe now, Mae. I'm here. Shh."

I tried my best to calm her but tears continued to drip down her face. My heart broke at the sight of her.

If only I wouldn't have left her.

Beep. Beep. Beep. 4:37 am.

The nurse only let me in Mae's room about an hour and a half ago. I had been listening to the beep of her heart monitor ever since. Mae looked so helpless in the hospital bed. So lifeless. I got up from the chair I was sitting in and made my way to her. I laid down next to her wrapping my arm around her fragile body.

There were no broken bones. Just a lot of bruises and cuts. But it wasn't the physical damage I was worried about...it was the emotional damage.

"I'm sorry, Mae. I'm so sorry," I let out a quiet sob as I placed a kiss to the top of her head.

I continued to talk to a sleeping Mae, "I should've been there for you. I shouldn't have left you the night Tommy showed up. I'm so sorry. I don't know what I was thinking. I swear I'll kill whoever it was that did this."

"It isn't your fault, Nick. You didn't do anything wrong," Mae tilted her head up to look at me. I cried in relief that she had woken up and held her tighter to me.

Mae placed her bruised hand under my chin and pulled my head towards hers. I kissed her lips gently, scared I would break her as if she were glass.

She pulled away and smiled softly. I smiled at her and rested my chin on the top of her head. We laid there tangled up in her hospital bed in silence for a few moments.

"Mae?" I spoke up.

"Yeah Nick?"

"Why did you call for me instead of Tommy?"

She was silent for a minute before responding, "I don't love Tommy."

Mae stared out of the car window once I had pulled into the driveway. I grabbed her hand reassuringly, "hey, we can face everyone together ok?"

She looked at me putting on a slight smile and nodded. I opened my car door and made my way to her side, opening her door for her. I placed my hand comfortingly on the small of her back and led her to the door of the Prettymuch house. I heard her exhale sharply as I opened the door.

Everyone was sitting around the kitchen counter as we walked in. Tommy looked up and saw us first.

"Mae! Oh thank God. I was so worried about you," he said as he wrapped his arms around her. I took a small step away from her as I willed myself not to punch the living shit out of him.

Maggie and the rest of the boys came over surrounding her, and I could see her eyes find mine. There was a look of fear in them.

"Why don't you give her a little space guys," I spoke up. Mae mouthed a "thank you" as everyone took a few steps back.

"What happened, Mae?" Maggie asked.

Mae looked at me shakily, "I'm not really ready to talk about it yet, Mags." Mae's voice was so quiet.

"Let's get you into some clean clothes. Come on, Mae." I stuck my hand out for her to take, which she did.

"Oh, I can help," Tommy said reaching for Mae.  I wrapped my arm around her defensively.

"Where were you to help when she needed it?" I snapped leading Mae upstairs and away from everyone.

Bastard.
