My eyes flutter open. I sit up slowly and look around. I'm in the Wheeler basement. Mike is sitting on the table beside me and El is glaring at us. I feel something weird on my hand. I look down and I see Mike is holding it. I pull it away. "You're awake!" He says and envelopes me in a hug. "Can't.....breathe...." I say. They all take turns hugging me. So whispers in my ear. "Youre avoiding Mike. Why?" "I get up and pull her to the bathroom. "You love him el. He loves you. I don't wanna get in the way of that." I say. She nods. "Id rather be dying than see a tear slip out of your eye El. You're my sister, and I love you. I don't need to be saved, but you and mike do. If you care about him, go get him. Don't worry about me." I tell her softly. She nods. "I need to clean up. Go on out there with Mike. Show him how much you love him." I say. I hear footsteps outside as I open thedoor and El walks out. I close the door and a tear falls out of my right eye and rolls down the cheek. I clean up the dried blood under my nose and wash my face. I dry my face and wipe the tears away.
I open the door and walk out. Everyone is sitting around el. Mike pats the spot beside him telling me to sit down. I go sit beside Will. Mike's smile fades. El has a blindfold on. " I found him. Hop. Hes walking in the woods. With Will's mom." She says. "My mom?" Will asks surprised and confused. I lay my head on his shoulder for 2 reasons. To comfort him, and I'm tired. He wraps his arm around me and runs my hair. "Still tired?" He asks and I slightly nod. Max looks at us and gives me a look that says 'what about Mike?' I shrug and ignore her. "Where are they going?" Mike asks. "I'll-annoy." She responds and takes off the cloth. "Illinois? The state of Illinois?" Mike asksand I roll my eyes. "No, the planet of Illinois." I say sarcastically. "Of course the state of Illinois!" I say after that as if it were obvious. He glares at me. "Why is it you're nice to me one minute and mean the next?" He asks. I recall how el and Max told me what they saw in the void when they were spying on the boys. "I guess its since I'm part of another species." I say. His eyes widen. "So Y'all did spy on us! El said the exact same thing!" He says. "They spied. I didn't." I say with a smirk, knowing I could make him hate me. He glares at me. "Then why'd you somehow teleport into my basement when we were talking about it, when will surprised us with an annoying and boring campaign, and when Will stormed out?!" He yells. "The first time was an accident, the other times I wanted to talk to Will!! Its not like I would teleport here to see you Mike!! I hate you and that will never change!!" I yell at him, all my hate coming back and me not liking him anymore. I can see tears appear in the corner of his eyes. I ignore it and get up. I start climbing the stairs wanting to get as far away from him as possible. "MIKE!!!! BREAKFAST!!!" I hear Mrs Wheeler yell. "NOT NOW MOM!!!!" He screams back. Someone knocks on the basement door when im halfway up. "NOT NOW MOM!!!" Mike yells again. "MIKE, OPEN THE DOOR!" Nancy yells in a serious tone. I finish climbing the stairs and open the door. "Have fun with your a**hole of a brother Nancy." I say and try and get past her and Jonathon. They block my way. "No. Go back downstairs. We have to talk to all of y'all." She says sternly. "No." I say and push my way past them. Right when I grab the doorknob, I feel a hand around my arm. I turn to see Jonathon. "Its important." He says. They pull me downstairs despite my struggling. Jonathon pushes me towards Will and I sit beside him. Will puts his arm around me. I scoot closerto him and lay my head on his shoulder. And then I realise it. I don't like Mike. I was confused. I always stood up to Mike for Will. Me and Will have always been there for each other.
I was snapped out of my thoughts by Nancy. "And look at the body temperatures." She lays a paper in front of Will and I. Will leans forward, making me move my head. "He likes it cold." Will says. "It is the exact same thing that happened to Will last year." Nancy says. "I'm gonna go. I have no idea what happened or what's happening." I say and get up. I start climbing the stairs when Nancy says "but you do know whats happening. Youre the daughter of that thing. You know what its doing." "Exactly. Its my father, so I'm a monster that isn't needed. And just because hes my father doesn't mean I know and monitor what he does." I say. Will gets up and grabs my hand. I turn around. "Please alissa. We need you. You lived there. You know how they fight. You know how things work in that place and how we can defeat it." He tells me. I bite my lip. I sigh.
"Fine." I say and walk back doqn the stairs with Will's hand still holding mine. I sit beside him. We both notice our hands. I blush and pull my hand away. I turn my head to cover the heat in my cheeks. Why am I blushing? Me and Will have held hands before! As friends! We're friends, so why am I blushing?! I think. I look at him once the heat leaves my face and I see him looking the opposite way as me. Mike, Lucas, and Jonathon are looking at him. They're all wearing smirks. I look over and Nancy, el, and Max are smirking at me. I give them a look of confusion. "So what time was this sauna test?" Nancy says changing this silent subject. "Around 9." We all say. "We also found out alissa has powers." Will adds. Nancy and Jonathon's eyes widen. "What?!" They say in unison. I shrug. "Im the daughter of a interdimensional monster. I guess I'm just now learning about them" i say. "What time did this happen at the hospital?" I ask. "Around 9" Nancy says. "You waited all night to call?" Jonathan asks. "I was waiting for the doctors to run some tests." She replies. "You weren't there?!" Will asks Jonathon. "Well, I'm here now" Jonathon replies to his brother. "Hallelujah!" Nancy says sarcastically
Ouch. Lover quarrel. Jonathan rolls his eyes. "So that proves my theory!" Nancy says. "She's flayed, just like Billy." Mike says. "What! We did not think of that!" I say sarcastically. He glares at me and I glare back. "Flayed?" Nancy asks. "The mind flatter. He flays people." Mike says. "Once this happens, they basically become him." I say, completing the thought. "If there's 2, we have to assune there's more." Will says and i nod. "Tom." Nancy and Jonathon say. So and Max start explaining about a lifeguard, Heather. They start loading into the car. Its just me, Will, and Mike left for the very back. "Seriously?" Mike says. "Welcome to our world." Me and Will say in unison. I climb in first, will next to me, and mike beside the door. I move to where my head is on the same side as Will's. I lay my head on his shoulder. "How are you doin alissa? Are you still tired?" He asks concerned. "A bit. I just wanted to be near you." I say. He puts his arm around me and runs my arm. I see Mike out of the corner of my eye looking annoyed. "What Mike? Bow you know how we feel." I say. Will laughs. Mike scold at us. "Whatever." He says and looks out the window.
When we get there, Mike gets out quickly. Then Will, and me. We all walk up to the door. Nancy tries knocking but is answered with no reply. They all look at El. She opens the door with her powers. We all walk in. We go in the kitchen and are greeted with the strong smell of chemicals. Too strong. "Cleaning chemicals. Are they downing these?" Nancy asks. "Either that or they went on one h*** of a cleaning spree." Jonathan replies. I feel like im gonna faint. "Will didn't eat chemicals last year, did he?" Nancy asks. I stumble backwards and sit in a chair. "No, the mind flayed never does the same thing twice. This is new." Will replies. "5th grade. What happens when you mix chemicals together?" Mike says. "You get a new substance." Will and lucas reply. my vision goes blurry. "So what if theyre making something?" Mike asks. "Inside themselves?" Lucas asks. "Yeah, if you drink this, it'll kill you." Max adds. I see spots start to fill my vision. They walk out and go in the dining room. I try and get up to follow them, but I lose my balance and hit the floor seeing nothing but black.
Mike POV
We walk into the dining room where it looks like they left without finishing dinner. Nancy walks into another room. We all follow. Ahe bends down and puts her hand on a spot on the carpet and picks up a wine bottle. "Blood. Tom had a bandage on his head." They start coming up with some conclusion and following clues like detectives off the FBI. We go to the garage. "Rope. They were tied up." Jonathan says. "Guys, where's alissa?" Will asks. We all turn. She isn't with us. Will runs in back to the kitchen. We all follow suit. We find her passed out on the floor. "She passed out. Mustve been the chemicals." Will says. "But the flayed have been downing it and are ok. Why did the smell and only the smell make her pass out. She's the daughter of the mind flayed." Max explains. Jonathan picks her up and puts her in the very back. Will gets beside her and im back beside the door. Will pulls her close and holds her. I think I like her, but its obvious her and Will like each other. And shes a b****. I then realize i don't like her, I was just confused. El is way better than alissa.
