Chapter 14: The Prophecy comes true
The moment Lycaon got away from me was the moment I knew things were going to go bad. He snapped at me and swiped at me at the same time so I had to back up. Then he turned and ran towards the tunnels. Leo and Nico were running out of wolves to kill. Most were dead on the ground and some were vaporized. I decided to finish off the rest of the wolves and then go after Artemis. Panting, we stood clutching our sides from the stitches (or at least I did). Nico staggered towards me. ‘Where’s Artemis?’ he gasped. Shoot! I totally forgot about her. I dashed towards the back of the cavern where there was a low tunnel. Stooping low, I entered it and only the glow of Riptide made it capable to see. When we passed the third bend, I heard a scream and other people, no demigods shouting ‘Artemis’. Oh gods. What had happened to her? Bursting out into a cavern, I could see there were at around twenty demigods, to be more precise, Camp Half-Blood demigods. They were all backed away and I could see a massive figure bent over another figure on the floor. With a shock I realized it was Artemis and she wasn’t moving. A strangled cry came from beside me and I saw Nico tear-stricken charge to Lycaon with his sword raised. Lifting it up high, he brought it down with all his strength. The head of Lycaon rolled over to the side, his snarl still visible. Overcoming my shock, I ran towards her. Artemis’ eyes were rolled to the back of her head and her neck was a mass of red blood. It was in tatters but feeling her wrist, there was a faint pulse there. Thank the gods. She was still alive.
I squatted by her side unsure of what to do. I could see Nico bawling his eyes out. Right, that doesn’t sound right but he was. That was the moment when I wondered if he was in love with her. Huh, funny idea. Yeah, tears were rolling down my eyes as well. She was a brilliant friend even though I had only known her for less than a week. A hand touched my shoulders and I looked up. It was Michael Timon, a son of Apollo with a gift of healing. ‘I could help,’ he offered. I stood up and moved to the side. He seemed to have a flask of nectar and trickled it over her neck and hummed a hymn about Apollo. A little colour had returned to her face and her neck had stopped bleeding. As we watched, some of the flesh had grown back. Kinda gross but at least she was going to live. Leo, Nico and I all breathed a sigh of relief. Everyone except for the campers who saw the attack. They were frozen with their mouths hanging open. One finally found his voice and whispered, ‘She got bitten by Lycaon. She’s going to be a lycanthrope!’
While we were all staring at her, Artemis had decided to wake up. ‘You can all stop crying now. I’m awake,’ she said and startled us all. ‘Can you get off me?’ she demanded, I’m having trouble breathing here.’ We stood back letting her sit up. She winced and looked around. ‘What happened? I found all these campers and then I think Lycaon attacked me. Did I pass out?’ she spoke it so fast that I had trouble catching up. Nico bent to her side and soothed her, ‘It’s alright Artemis. Lycaon is dead. You were attacked but you’ll be fine.’ She stopped at processed the words. Then she went white again. ‘I got bit?’ Artemis asked. We nodded mutely. No point on hiding the truth. ‘Oh god. That means… that means I’m going to be a lycanthrope?’ she stammered through the last sentence. Great she realized what’s happened to her. Well, no point in putting off the truth. She started shaking and had trouble controlling her breathe. I think she was hyperventilating. Gosh, what a twist in the prophecy. ‘Ok people, I’m going to Iris-message Chiron and see if he can send some sort of transport to get us back to camp.’ With that I left.
I went to a fountain nearby and fished out a gold drachma. There were no people around as most people go home before sunset. There seemed to be just enough sunlight to form a rainbow. Tossing it in the fountain, I said, ‘O’ Iris Goddess of the Rainbow, show me Chiron at Camp Half-Blood.’ The mist shimmered and showed Chiron at archery practice. He seemed really surprised to see me. ‘Percy? Did you succeed? Is everyone alright?’ he asked.
‘Yeah, almost everyone is alright. I’ll explain when we get back to camp. We also found the missing campers. Lycaon was holding them prisoner.’ I said. ‘There around twenty demigods so can you send something to pick us up as soon as possible. ‘Cause I figure that all of us demigods will attract an awful amount of monsters.’ Chiron nodded.
‘I’ll get as many flying chariots there are and send them over right away,’ he said ‘And some pegasi. I’ll send Blackjack as well,’ he added. With that, the message faded away. Trudging back to the cave, at least I had some good news.
