Artemis
Chapter 1: Why of all people, is it me?
For normal people, getting an extra two week detention on top of your already three week detention, being late for almost all your classes and failing almost your classes isn’t normal right? Well, it is for me.
My name is Artemis Fallow, I’m fifteen years old and I’m the ‘princess loser’ at HSMSE High School. Loser because I’m not smart enough in specific subjects to be a nerd. I have no sense in fashion to be in cheerleading and I don’t fit in anywhere else. Princess because all the boys have a secret crush on me because I’m pretty, but since barely any girls are my friends, they don’t treat me very well. The only subjects I actually excel in are Maths, Science and Art. The rest I’ve never gotten above an E+. Yeah it’s a school for engineering, but I’m not the best or popular in the school. With my dyslexia and ADHD, I’m seriously not the best kid. We may be a ‘special’ school, but we still have bullies, the ‘popular kids’ and losers. I only have one friend; Annabeth Chase. She’s three years older than me but she’s nice to me anyhow.
Let me tell you a little more about me. I lost my dad when I was pretty much a newborn so mum had to bring me up (that’s what mum said at least). All I knew was my mom was a soldier in the US Aviation. So she wasn’t around often. When I was seven, mum taught me how to shoot a gun and fly a Boeing 747 and Grumman F-14 Tomcat. When I was eight, I had already graduated to third grade dan in Karate. That was also when mum died during a military mission. I was sent to an orphanage. I was the odd one out in the orphanage. No one liked me because of my eyes, which are an abnormally bright blue. I had ADHD and dyslexia when I was really young and people seemed scared of me naturally. As far as schooling is concerned, the first school I got expelled from was when I was six. I pushed some bully into the pool and he almost drowned. It’s not my fault that he couldn’t swim! Mum had taught me a lesson I will never forget, which was of course getting my backside tanned then getting a congratulations for standing up to the bully. The next school I got expelled in was when I was nine. It was when I went to a field trip. I pressed some wrong button in the aquarium and the whole class went on an unplanned swim. The last time I got expelled was when I was thirteen. I blew up the whole science building accidentally when I mixed a chemically wrong. Three people got severely injured. Luckily no one got killed. That was when I got sent away to another foster home.
Out of school, I play the violin, flute and piano. I’m a ninth grade Dan now, a black belt in Karate and I was in the national team for fencing. I also am good with archery and javelin. I’ve gotten parts in the school musicals but I seemed to get kicked out before I could perform though. I also took on language classes and I can speak Latin, French and Italian very well. I could also speak Greek quite well. I’m not boasting or anything though.
So it was a usual day for me, but little did I know that my life was about to change forever. It started out during English. I received two weeks of detention because I couldn’t hand in my stupid Shakespeare assignment. That substitute teacher is so mean. She asked almost all questions at me and I couldn’t stop thinking ‘If I don’t put my hand up, why can’t you just not pick me?!’ Dragging my feet as I put away my books in my locker and headed towards the cafeteria.
I sat in my usual spot in the cafeteria, with Annabeth. ‘How was your day so far?’ she asked me cheerfully.
‘Horrible.’ I snapped. Annabeth grinned at me and I had no choice but to grin back. It was just so easy to be around Annabeth. ‘I got f-ing detention with Ms Drake again.’
‘Poor you,’ replied Annabeth.
‘Yeah. My life sucks,’ I replied back.
‘You know, I feel that today something is gonna happen. Something really amazing and out of the ordinary is going to happen. Something that will change your life!’
‘Are you being sarcastic?’
‘No!’ Annabeth said with mock shock. The bell rang and it was time for me to go to my next class. So I said quick goodbyes and rushed off to Maths. The rest of the day past as a blur and thankfully the other teachers were not as mean as Ms Drake and didn’t give me detention.
So, I trudged off to detention at 3:30. Her back was turned to me as I entered her office. I sat down ‘So what am I doing today?’ I asked.
‘Not the usual,’ she replied and turned around. Instead of her usual shrivelled up face it was a pointed face and there were gaping jaws lined with pointed teeth. Her body had turned a disgusting animal and her arms had whips dripping with poison. I don’t scream and I didn’t intend to then. I have quick reflexes so I looked around for anything to be a weapon against her. There was nothing. She seemed to have emptied her office of any blades. So I instead yanked her table, scattered books and papers everywhere and slammed it into her. She yowled in pain a swiped at me. I dodged and threw a chair at her. It slammed into her face and put her off balance for a moment. I heard a sound behind me and my heart sank thinking it was more monsters trying to finish me off. Instead it was Annabeth. ‘Quickly Artemis! Take this.’ She tossed me a knife and I gawked at her. Meanwhile, Ms Drake had gotten up and the next thing I knew was that my neck was on fire. I dimly heard Annabeth yelling at me and then I was thrown against the wall. I felt something crack in my chest and blinding pain there. I could barely breathe. ‘Help!’ I heard Annabeth shouting. I blinked the stars out from my eyes and I saw Annabeth pinned under Ms Drake and her knife beyond reach. I sprinted to it, ignoring the pain, picked it up and slashed down the blade through Ms Drake’s spiky throat. She screamed and dissolved into dust. Yeah, she literally exploded into gold dust. Gross! I panted, with my chest burning and my neck still sore and feeling raw. Annabeth scrambled over to me just as I collapsed. The last thing I remember is her leaning over me and trickling something that tasted of chocolate into my mouth.
