Chapter 8: Separated
So last night seriously sucked. I woke up to find that the train had again crowded. Percy was already awake and looking very grim. I mean, who wouldn’t be, we’re on a suicide mission, riding a train to our deaths and we lost a member. Yeah, life sucks. People kept on looking at us like we were street kids instead of train passengers, but thanks to Percy, people didn’t really challenge us due to his ‘wolf stare’. I guess we do look kinda wild.
‘Where are we now?’ I asked Percy.
‘Somewhere near Salt Lake City. We should get to LA either in the afternoon or late afternoon.’ Percy replied.
‘What about Artemis?’ I asked.
‘I just hope she’ll be able to make it to LA by herself. She’ll be too far away for us to catch up now.’ Percy said.
‘Last night with Sybaris was scary wasn’t it?’ I said just to make some conversation.
‘Yeah. I can’t believe Artemis would actually let herself get thrown out of the window.’ Percy said, ‘I wonder if the train driver has actually realized.’
We sat in silence for a long time watching landscapes whizzing past us. All the while thinking where Artemis could possibly be…
Artemis
The last thing I knew from when Sybaris hit me was crashing through the train window and landing next to the train tracks. When I woke up, the sky was lightening and it was really cold. Shivering, I crawled to some trees and huddled there as I tried to get my numb fingers to check for injuries. My head was throbbing and felt sticky. Then I realized a massive cut was there. The glass must have done that and it was a miracle that I was still alive from that blood loss. I managed to get a bandage and quickly wrap it around my head. Then I went to reach for some nectar but then realized my pack was still on the train. Groaning I decided it was no use trying to wait for them to come and get me, so I picked myself up and started trudging along the tracks. I didn’t get very far because my head started the swim and my vision blurred. But somehow I managed to get myself up some way of the tracks before passing out again.
This time, I woke up to be in a quick makeshift camp and a boy around my age tending to the fire. My mouth had a chocolaty taste to it and I realized that I had been given nectar. That boy definitely must be a half-blood. He turned to me as I tried to sit up. He was rather cute in a way. My heart seemed to do a tap dance just by seeing him which wasn’t exactly helpful since I knew no idea who he is. He had really pale skin like mine and messy black hair also like mine. His eyes had a mad fire in them which suggested that he was either a genius or a madman. ‘Glad you’re awake. Found you by the train tracks. What happened?’ he inquired me.
‘Wait,’ I said, ‘first tell me who you are.’
‘Well, I’m Nico Di Angelo, son of Hades,’ he said, ‘you?’
‘Artemis Fallow, daughter of Phobos. I’m on this quest to go to Lycaon or else Lycaon will launch an attack on camp.’ I said.
‘Interesting. Lycaon is a really vicious and smelly mutt.’ Nico said ‘Though I never knew he has a pack big enough to take on camp. Maybe this might be an answer to the missing campers at camp.’
‘Yeah.’ I replied, ‘Chiron and Annabeth said something about missing campers too.’
‘Well, it’s three in the afternoon. Where are you going?’
‘To San Diego. Preferably the San Diego train station ‘cause that’s where Percy and Leo are.’ I said.
‘Percy and Leo are on the quest too?’ Nico asked? I nodded, ‘Well, if you let me come with you on this quest then I can get you to that train station in almost no time.’
‘Really? Sure, but are you sure you want to go on this quest. It’ll be very dangerous.’ I warned.
‘Nah, I eat danger for breakfast. So can I come?’ Nico smiled at me hopefully.
‘Ok, very well.’ I said smiling.
‘Break camp,’ he ordered me, ‘and we’ll get going.’ I wondered how. He didn’t seem to have any magical travelling equipment but I did as he said. ‘Ready?’ he asked me. I nodded nervously. He took my hand, which would’ve been embarrassing if anyone else was near. ‘This’ll make you drowsy.’ He warned and stepped forward. I followed him and instantly the world blacked out.
