Chapter 17: My First Change

It was ten days later and Chiron reminded me that tonight was going to be my first change. He told me to go to Zeus’ Fists and change there. The first thing I noticed after I was bitten was three days later, I could see, hear and smell things that a typical human shouldn’t be able to. Then as that was going on, I was beginning to get more and more uncomfortable with silver. Yesterday, I accidentally brushed against Lykos and received a massive red burn which hurt like hell. My hand now tingles whenever I touch the hilt of Lykos. Other than Chiron, Leo, Percy and Nico who know my secret, Annabeth also knows. I think she figured it out for herself.

She went up to me one day and asked me. I had no choice but to say yes. Anyway I trust her. So I stood alone in front of the Zeus’ Fists, with the huge towering boulders. I could feel the moon beginning to rise. A shudder ran through my body as my change began. I have to say, it was the most painful thing I’ve ever felt. More painful than the time I fought the drakon. My body felt like it was exploding. My spine was bent downwards and my face felt like it was being pulled with some pliers. My finger nails fell out and was replaced by claws. I couldn’t think I couldn’t control what I did. I screamed and howled into the night and probably woke every camper up but I couldn’t help it. Thrashing on the ground, I tried to control my movements but my limbs wouldn’t respond to my brain. After what felt like hours, the pain sort of subsided and I managed to get it under control and just lie on the ground waiting for the moon to disappear so I could change back.

When it was finally dawn, I was so relieved. It seemed forever when my body snapped back into the normal position. My clothes which seemed to have reappeared when I changed back, were covered in dirt and muddy water. Probably from rolling on the ground all night. I hurried back to my cabin hoping that no one saw me. Quickly changing my clothes (and washing my hair), I hurried to bed trying to get some sleep (I didn’t get any last night). All too quickly, I heard Annabeth, Percy, Leo and Nico pounding on my cabin door yelling for me to get up. Groaning, I got out of bed to open the door. Their faces were of anxiety as they saw the dark circles under my eyes. Opening the door wider, I said, ‘Come in.’ They piled in and after some awkward silence, Nico finally spoke up, ‘How was last night?’

I thought about my answer then finally answered, ‘Really painful. It was the worst pain I’d ever felt. You probably heard me screaming last night.’ Glancing at them, they nodded.

‘It woke pretty much every camper up,’ said Leo, ‘Gave everyone in the Hephaestus cabin a real big fright. Lucky none of the Ares kids decided to give search.’ Standing up, I walked over to the door. ‘Save something for me after breakfast,’ I called over my shoulder, ‘I’m going to talk to Chiron.’

I entered the Big House and saw Chiron sitting in the lounge watching me closely. ‘How are you feeling?’ he asked.

‘Tired, but alright,’ I replied. Chiron nodded. I had a feeling that I wasn’t his first pupil who was a werewolf. Thankfully he didn’t ask me any more questions. Chiron nodded towards the door, ‘Go and have breakfast. You need energy to make up for the loss of sleep.’ I headed towards the door. As I walked towards the Mess Hall, I couldn’t help thinking that it was only last week when I was still serving detention at HSMSE High.

The End. Hope you've enjoyed it. Comment please! :)
