"What do you mean you've run out of rooms?"
Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, and Jiang Yanli had just arrived in Caiyi town. They had wanted to rest there before heading to the Cloud recesses, only to find out that every inn was full.
"I'm sorry sir," the owner told them. "Usually our business is booming but earlier today a wealthy young master came in and booked all of the rooms."
The three siblings all shared surprised glances. Who would book a whole tavern? The owner carried on.
"He had specifically said to drive anyone away except for his own party. Again, I'm sorry, but I think it will be better if you find another inn."
Wei Wuxian wanted to cut in but there was a call from the entrance. Just then, two young female cultivators dressed in gold walked into the building. At the sight of them, the owner immediately went over.
"Ah misses, I've done what was asked. All of the rooms have been cleaned and I have sent any other guests away," he said, motioning to the group from Yunmeng. The girl closest to the group only spared them a short glance before handing a box that she was carrying to the owner.
"I need you to put these perfume bags in our young master Jin's room. They keep any mosquitoes at bay," she said. Beside her, her companion giggled.
"Mianmian, you're so considerate! No wonder our young master favours you!" The girl named Mianmian elbowed her companion.
"Don't talk like that," she said. The companion only shrugged before turning back to the owner.
"You should be very careful with this and take our young master into account."
"Don't worry misses, I fully understand," he assured them. The Mianmian girl smiled happily and turned to her friend.
"Let's go check our young masters room," she said. At that, the owner led the two girls away and up the stairs. The Yunmeng group stared after them. Jiang Cheng huffed beside Wei Wuxian.
"They must be from the Jin clan. I'm guessing they're here for the lectures as well and decided to rest in Caiyi town," he said. Wei Wuxian watched the girls climb up the stairs curiously. He had never seen anyone from the Jin clan before but ultimately, he wasn't impressed. When one of the disciples that had traveled with them questioned Jiang Cheng on their next move, Wei Wuxian thought of something.
"I have an idea," he said aloud and walked after the two girls.
"Wei Wuxian, what are you doing?" Jiang Cheng called after his brother. Wei Wuxian looked back at him and gave him a cheeky smile.
"Don't worry Jiang Cheng, I just wanna try something," he said before moving up the stairs. When he was almost to the top he called out to the girls.
"Miss Mianmian."
At the sound of her name, Mianmian and her companion both turned to see who had called them. They were both shocked by the appearance of the young man climbing up the steps. It wasn't everyday that you saw someone with their arm in a sling and a huge scar on their face. Wei Wuxian was aware of their staring but elected to ignore it. He smiled charmingly at them anyway.
"Miss Mianmian, can I borrow one of your perfume bags?" he asked as he walked up to them. Mianmian cleared her throat and tried looking away from the side of Wei Wuxian's face. I knew people were going to stare at me strangely, Wuxian thought bitterly.
"Who are you?" Mianmian asked him. "And who gave you the right to call me Mianmian?" Wei Wuxian looked at her curiously before pointing to her companion.
