(y/n) smiled as she looked at her newly settled in apartment. despite it not being a new building, the apartment held a certain charm that she'd surely grow fond of. taking a final sip of her almost unhealthily sweet coffee she went to the npa.
it was an exciting day at work, after all, she'd be working with L.
never in her wildest dreams would she have thought that she'd be working alongside L, the detective that had inspired when she was younger to be what she was today. someone who did her very best to serve the justice she never had.she arrived to her office, plopping down on her chair. she was very early, like always. the dark circles seemingly more prominent from the constant hours of research and theories of who exactly this man was.
"oh, you're kami ichigo. correct?"
a voice interrupted the girl's thoughts. she turned to the older man, watari as he was known my most.
"yes, i take you must be watari?"
the old man nodded, looking at (y/n) warmly. he reminded her of his many children back at wammy's house, his heart swelled with bittersweet memories of their childhoods.
"L wishes to speak to you, if that's alright."
(y/n) nodded, trying to keep her excitement in check, she kept an unfazed expression while the older man set up the laptop.
"hello, you must be kami ichigo. i must admit, i'm impressed by the previous cases you've worked on."
the girl nodded, flattered by the fact that L looked into her before their first encounter.
"ah, i'm glad you got here early. there were certain things i wanted to discuss with you."
the distorted voice of L stated and (y/n) nodded in agreement.
"of course. is something the matter?"
"no, not at all. i just didn't expect someone to come to the same conclusion as i did so quickly."
"it's not that big of a deal. i have spent many nights theorizing about who exactly could be kira."
the girl sheepishly replied, despite being what one could call a "child prodigy" she wasn't very used to high praise, much less from someone like L of all people.
"i can tell, which is why i wanted to say that i trust you. i'd like to discuss various aspects of the case with you after the meeting with the npa is done, i'm staying in a suite at teito hotel. watari will facilitate your arrival here."
"thank you, L. i'm glad you're deciding to trust me on this. i won't let you down."
"i know you won't. smart of you to be using an alias, finding out your real name was a bit of a hassle."
(y/n)'s cheeks flared up in embarrassment, in a desperate attempt to reel in the situation she cleared her throat.
"haha- you don't say."
"no need to be embarrassed, kami."
"ah- i'm not embarrassed."
"no need to be so serious either."
she cracked a smile at L's attempt to making her feel better. she was glad that at least they seemed to get along, at least she wouldn't have to work with a pompous prick or something along those lines.
"this is pretty self explanatory, please do not speak about your association with me or this meeting with anyone."
"of course."
she swiftly took her old laptop out of her bag and placed it on the desk in front of her with a sigh and she quickly got to work.
"i'm assuming you want a report on how the information of each criminal was revealed to the public."
"yes, that would prove to be very useful. thank you, kami."
"no problem."
she diligently got to work, taking out the notebook where she wrote most, if not all the victims to the unsub's heart attacks. looking into the database, she could see who received what information, whether it was confidential or not.
little by little people started piling in and the young woman felt herself shrinking into her seat. she was much too accustomed to having only a couple of people around her, people she was familiar with, people that talked to her about their children and how they made new friends at school.
to say she was intimidated was an understatement, she was terrified. but she wouldn't let it get to her, or at least she tried her best, working as diligently as possible without being distracted by her anxious fidgeting.
she could get accustomed to various social situations, it was a talent of hers, blending in or standing out, but, it didn't necessarily mean she preferred to be stared at. quite the contrary.

"thank you, everyone. i feel we're one step closer to finding kira. before i go, i'm afraid i have one additional request to make. this is directed to the teams investigating the victims, tv news, and internet: i would like you to go back and take a closer look at the exact way in which the victims' identities were made public. be as thorough as possible. in particular, i want to know if photos of the victims were made available to the public in japan. i'll leave it to you."
everyone in the office started packing up. saying their goodbyes, distinct chatter could be heard all across the room as everyone slowly piled out.
"bye, kami! i'll see you tomorrow!"
matsuda beamed at the younger girl, making her adopt the cheery expression along with him.
"see you!"
she waved him off and slumped into her chair. she was exhausted and was in a desperate need of something energizing, anything.
she was quickly pulled out of her thoughts however by watari."if it's alright with you, kami. we'll be leaving for the hotel right now."
the girl hesitated a bit, clearly nervous about her very near encounter with one of the people she admired the most. she put those thoughts aside and got to packing as quickly as possible. in a mere matter of seconds she was done and ready to go alongside watari.
oh boy was she in for a ride.
