"i'll see you off, kami. i insist."

L prodded at the girl and she begrudgingly agreed, eventually. after some negotiation in the time that she'd spent investigating independently with L. it was decided that (y/n) would go back home without watari, on the condition that L saw her off, which they both thought was a fair enough compromise. lawliet sluggishly slipped his feet into his worn out sneakers and followed her to the elevator.

"i seriously cannot believe you wouldn't let watari take you." L mused as he stuffed his hands into his jeans' baggy pockets, which tended to be filled to the brim with candy wrappers, thankfully, watari washed them that same day. (y/n) exhaled sharply beside him, slowly etching closer to the warmth of his body.

"i can't depend on watari every time i need to get to the hotel." the girl huffed out, crossing her arms over her chest. their shoulders touching, both of them were content, even if they didn't admit it.

"no, but i want you to."

"why?"

"it's very simple. i want to make things easier for you."

she gave him the smallest of smiles, which he undoubtedly returned with warmth he only seemed to show her, a warmth that was unconscious even to him.

"thank you L, i appreciate it. but i've been alone most of my life, i think i can handle myself." the girl gave him a warm gaze, looking at him from the side.

"i'm sure you know that from experience though."

he curtly nodded before replying.

"i do. which is why i want you to accept my help."

she sighed and before she could reply the elevator let out a ding, indicating they had arrived at their destined floor. exiting the elevator, they both took a look around. it was a rather fancy hotel but it probably didn't have a higher rate because of where it was located. it was a rather dodgy part of town.

"now, please be careful." he said in a faintly frantic manner, scrunching up his eyebrows the slightest bit.

"i will, i graduated top of my class at the academy for a reason. so, don't worry."

lawliet shook his head, feigning disapproval of her arrogance. but he knew she was so confident for good reason.

"i'll try, let me know when you've arrived home. i'm assuming you'll come back tomorrow after work?"

the girl nodded and he left her at the entryway of the hotel. walking away, she briskly turned around and caught his attention. she waved him off, almost like an old friend would after you'd walk them back home.
