"goodbye girls... I love you" she trailed off into the hazy distance filled with a suffocating white smoke. the smoke engulfed my body immediately after. "momma no.." I choked out before my surroundings overtook me and everything went blank. I woke with a start sitting straight up and hitting my head in the same spot that I have every night for countless nights now. I pulled my sleep deprived body out of the little bottom bunk bed that I shared with my twin sister nell and dragged my feet quietly down to the bathroom next to aunt Claire's room. I turned on the bright light squinting into it trying to see my bruised forehead. where there was usually just a bruise there was now a gash that was bleeding profusely onto my white charlotte catholic high school swimming sweatshirt. I grabbed a towel and added pressure to the cut muffling the bleeding quickly. of course the day of my birthday I cut my head open. just my luck. I tiptoed
down the hall quietly in an effort not to wake Nell, aunt claire, uncle will or my cousin miles. I succeed and tuck myself back into bed allowing myself to succumb to my sleepy urges and the never ending cycle of repetitive dreams about my long dead parents.
