When I told Amber that Rose and Elaine wanted to take her shopping, my sister instantly bombarded me with questions before realizing that she had no idea who the fuck Elaine was. I explained that she was Rose's mother and Amber exploded with excitement at the thought of going to the mall with two grown women– one of which was an actual mother. She marked the date on her calendar, even though it was about five days after the concert and there was really no point in doing so.
She pulled me into her room, and video called her boyfriend so that she could try on different outfits for the occasion. I truly didn't understand why she had to plan something out– she was only going to the mall, and when I voiced out my opinion, all I got was a lecture on the importance of first impressions. Then, she told me how she was going to wear the same outfit for her award ceremony.
I saw Dean fail to stifle his laughter from her laptop's screen, so as soon as she went back into her closet to change into her sixth fucking outfit, I hung up the call and slammed the Mac shut. I got an earful from her when she realized what I did, but when I reminded her that I could easily take her phone back so that she could complete her punishment, she instantly clamped her mouth shut.
The night after the concert, Amber had a nightmare. She came into my room at two o'clock in the morning and crawled into bed with me. I woke up when I felt her struggling with my covers.
"Amber, what the fuck?" I mumbled groggily, squinting at her silhouette. "What are you doing here?"
"I had a nightmare," She replied in a small, scared voice, something so unlike her. I was drifting between consciousness and sleep, so although it took me a while to process what she said, I still pulled back the covers so she could join me. She accepted the invitation and instantly snuggled into me. Her head rested on my chest, and I wrapped an arm around her to try and get comfortable.
"What was it about?" I whispered, trying hard not to go back to sleep.
"Elise was yelling about how she wanted to give me up for adoption, and dad thought she was crazy, so he was also yelling back at her. Then, during the night, she just took me to an orphanage and drove off." She admitted, pressing her cheek into my chest.
We laid in silence; I was processing what she'd just said while she tried to forget that she had the dream in the first place. I pulled the covers over both of us and leaned down to kiss her hair. I hated that Elise was the cause of her nightmare. I still didn't understand why she decided to barge in on us like that.
"You're stuck with me forever, Bee. Whether you like it or not, you're not going anywhere." I reaffirmed, tightening my hold on her. She responded with a small hum before she relaxed in my hold and fell sleep.
Sure, maybe we never grew up as two peas in a pod, but we were now closer than ever. I liked having my baby sister in my arms like this, and although I knew I'd regret letting her fall asleep with me later, I still went to sleep with a small smile on my face, hoping she wouldn't kick me like the last time.

Amber without her phone was an incessant, persistent, annoying little shit, but when it was her last week of school, those characteristics seemed to amplify. Since they've covered the entire syllabus, the students didn't have anything to learn, so the school organized a bunch of activities for them. They were even hosting an awards ceremony at the end of the school week to acknowledge all their students' efforts in school. The lack of lessons meant she didn't have anything to occupy herself with at home which eventually led to her annoying me again.
