"Hey..." El blinks at me. "Where did you go?"
"Nowhere," I say. It's lunchtime, and I'd snuck out of school last period, skipping the class. I didn't think El would have noticed, but I guess she did.
"Are you keeping secrets from me?" She frowns.
"It's not that important. I just went for a short drive."
She doesn't believe me, but she lets it go. I'm glad I didn't crack under her scrutinizing gaze and told her what I really did. I don't think she'd be too happy with it... yet. Not until I had some results to show.
"It's a nice day today," she says. "Should we go eat outside?" I glance at our usual table, where the cheerleaders and footballers are, just as someone catches Harry touching Priscilla's thigh and Allen gets to his feet furiously.
Just a regular day at the cheerleader table.
"Let's," I say. It would be nice to not be groped today either. Somehow people will not leave me alone. Guys keep touching me, thinking I'd readily accept their touch. I guess it's my fault for having been so easy before... but I really thought I'd made it clear to them that I didn't want that kind of thing anymore. It surprised me how many of them I had to persistently tell off. The attacks were starting to taper off though, much to my relief. I guess they were finally getting the message.
El and I choose a shady spot to eat, so we don't get overheated. It's a lovely spring day, with the sun shining bright above us.
"So you're really not going to tell me what you did?" she asks.
"Nope," I say. "This sandwich is really good."
She sighs and gives up trying to grill me. "I made it. Aaron taught me how to handmake my own mayonnaise."
"You're spending a lot of time with Aaron nowadays," I say in a sour tone.
"He's teaching me loads! I love it – he's so nice too, he never gets angry at me or anything." I grunt in reply, and she stops talking. "You're not jealous... are you?"
"No. Of course not." How can I be, when she was willing to let me have my urges filled by sharing me with other guys?
Which is, of course, something I'll never do, because there's absolutely no fucking way I'm willing to do the same. And if I started, and she asked me if she could, there's no way I would be able to say no.
In any case, I didn't want to. I really, really didn't, no matter what my body felt.
"You know that my heart and soul belongs only to you, right? I'd say my body too, but I'm sharing that with our baby," she reassures me.
"I know that. Sorry," I say. "I guess I'm just insecure. I mean, you're so adorable. How can anyone resist?"
She blushes, shaking her head. "I'm not. Besides. You're here to protect me, so you have nothing to worry about." She leans her head on my shoulder as we finish off our lunch. I smile to myself. Really, how can anyone resist El?
This is a real concern though. I've noticed guys giving her looks, now that she's been dressing in the clothes I got her. She's also been glowing, thanks to her pregnancy. Not to mention her boobs are all swollen.
"You're right," I tell her. "I'll protect you. No matter what."
"Mm. And I'll protect you."
Her response makes me blink.
When we're done with lunch, we walk together back to school.
"Hey, look – the junior school must have gone on a field trip," El says, pointing to the building opposite ours, where a school bus is parking by the side of the road. Our school was connected to a junior school for students younger than fourteen. I'd gone there.
