"OK CLASS. I AM MEGIDO." Ms. Megido slapped her pointer to the whiteboard to bring attention to her name written on it. "I'M THIS YEAR TEACHER. BE GOOD." She brought the pointer down other side. Ms. Megido began to pace back and forth in front of the class. "ABOUT. I WAS A HANDMAIDEN, FLED FROM MASTER. I FLEW JAPAN TO U.S."
Every year, Ms. Megido loudly repeated her story to the class. Few took interest in her history, though none dared oppose her. She was seldom likely to hurt anyone, but her blunt nature intimidated her students.
After a while of repeating her autobiography to the fifth graders, she sat down at her desk and crossed her arms across the desk surface. "TIME FOR STUDENT INTROS." She picked up the attendance sheet. "ALPHABET. STARTING WITH..." She squinted at the paper. "ZAHHAK."
"I believe my name is at the end of the alphabet, Ms. Megido," Equius informed her.
"WE GO BACKWARDS," she said sternly. "INTRODUCE, HOBBY, HOW YOUR SUMMER WENT."
Equius stood, wiping sweat off of his forehead. "My name is Equius," he announced to the class.
In a melancholy tone, they greeted with a "Hiiii Equiuuus." They did this every year and knew at least two boring and obsolete facts about nearly everyone in their grade. The teachers always found it strangely necessary to do a whole examination of each student.
"I enjoy robotics and archery," Equius continued. "My summer went well." He quickly sat down.
The students went through the cycle, the only one finding it fun being Feferi, who introduced herself with a certain gusto and happily informed her classmates of her wonderful summer of scuba diving and lake trips and whatever shit crazy rich ten-year-olds like her did.
"NOW WE ARE DONE," Ms. Megido started, "LESSON TIME."
The students groaned in unison. Jade Harley spoke up for the class. "It's only the first day of school, though!" she shouted out.
"TOO BAD. TEACHER CHOOSE AGENDA." She pulled out her seating chart. "PEIXES, EGBERT. PASS WORKBOOKS TO CLASS." Ms. Megido pointed to a large cardboard box next to her desk. It was filled with math workbooks.
Feferi gladly rose from her seat to assist her instructor. John reluctantly did the same. They gathered the workbooks in their arms and were met with glares as they distributed them.
"NOW CHILDREN," Ms. Megido announced. "WE BEGIN LEARNING."
