"Ugh..." Terezi sat up in her sleeping bag, rubbing her hurting neck. Sleeping in anything other than a nice and comfy bed made her ache.
Her friend Nepeta was still asleep, curled up in her own sleeping bag. It was 9:00 AM.
Terezi stretched her arms behind her back. "Nep," she muttered. "Wake up, it's breakfast time."
Nepeta's large eyes slowly flickered open. "Hm?"
Terezi stood up. "What do you want for breakfast?"
"Mmm... cereal." Nepeta stretched out.
Terezi shuffled through the doorway of her bedroom, passing her calendar on her way, when a red pen marking caught her eye. She stopped to look at what it said:Wednesday 3rd
F1RST D4Y OF SCHOOL"Nepeta," Terezi began. "What day is it?"
"Wednesday, I think."
"Oh my gosh! Nepeta, we have school!"
Nepeta sat up immediately. "That's next week though!"
"Today's the third?"
Nepeta nodded, prompting Terezi to smack the calendar with her hand. "Look here!" Nepeta did as she was told, and her eyes widened. She jumped up.
As she started frantically packing her stuff, Nepeta asked, "Why would our parents let us have a sleepover if there was school??"
Terezi was dressed in an instant. "I don't know about your mom, but mine is kinda crappy." She waved her arm. "Just leave your stuff here. You can get it after school."
Nepeta stopped what she was doing, quickly switched her clothes, and ran out the room with Terezi.
"Mom," Terezi called to the living room where her mom resided. "Why didn't you tell me there was school today?"
Her mom seemed to ignore her as she laughed idiotically at the television. She was watching a crime show.
Terezi sighed. "Let's just get out of here," she told her friend. The two rushed out the door, not even bothering to bring with them school bags. After all, it was only the first day.Fortunately, Skaia Elementary was nearby Terezi's house, so they didn't have to do much running. Despite this, Terezi was panting heavily when they reached the front of the school. She was considerably short, even for a fifth grader, so it made it harder for her to run. Nepeta, on the other hand, was quite tall in ten-year-old terms, reaching 5'1". She was also well exercised, so she was not very tired at all.
"You ok?" Nepeta asked Terezi. She nodded, still breathless. The girls entered the school together. There was silence, since all of the students were in their respective classes. Terezi and Nepeta turned left to the office, which was positioned right by the front entrance indoors. They quickly went through the open office doors.
As they did so, the lady at the desk immediately perked up from her slumped-over position. "Hi girls, what can I do for ya?" she said to them.
"Uh, we need to check in," Nepeta told her. "We're late."
"Names?" The woman placed her fingers on the keyboard, ready to type. They gave her their names and she entered them into the computer. "Thanks, girls! Now, head up to..." she peered at the computer screen. "...Ms. Leijon's class, both of you!" She quickly wrote a couple of passes for them and waved them out of the office. Nepeta and Terezi dashed up to class hand-in-hand.
