As we made our way to the police department, positive words of encouragement were shouted toward the protesters who joined in the fight for justice. We slowly but surely made our way over to the front of the department, standing before it with our fists raised in the air. Everyone started chanting in hopes of being heard by anyone inside.
A few minutes passed by and multiple police officers started showing up, trying to thin out our crowd. We stood our ground showing no signs of hostility, keeping our word of holding peaceful protests. As more cops showed, they wielded their weapons, mostly guns, firing warning shots. A few individuals from our crowd moved up to the front, hands in the air, showing they planned to remain peaceful and harmless to the community surrounding us.
"Please, hear us out," A young girl around the age of sixteen pleaded. "We don't want any violence to happen, we just want justice. We want rights. We want to be equal to you!" A few shots rang through the clearing, making multiple people jump in surprise. "Please! I'm only talking!" She continued as she knelt down to the ground.
An officer advanced, walking towards her with visible hostility. I moved up to the front of the crowd, mentally preparing myself to protect her if anything were to happen.
The officer reached for something strapped to his belt, one arm raised, attempting to show that he won't hurt her. On a hunch, I suspected he'd do the opposite, and I slowly approached them with the intent to run in front of her before anything could happen.
"We just want justice, we come here in peace. We have the right to do so!" As if that was the last straw, the officer hastily pulled out a small canister, pressing on it in a feeble attempt to mace her.
I ran up to the girl, pushing her out of the way. She seemed younger than me, I the last thing I wanted was for a child to get hurt. My eyes started stinging and burning, the feeling was horrendous. I restrained myself from screaming, I was afraid of giving them another "reason" to open fire. My whole body was trembling as I stood up, the sound of the girl crying filled my head.
I retreated back into the crowd, many kind people offered to help me. Assuring them I was fine, I tried walking past them. My escape was unsuccessful, and they began taking out a white substance, holding it above my head.
"I'm fine, I swear!" I gently nudge the man facing me away, and straighten my back, staring straight at him. Sure, it did sting like hell, but I didn't feel like getting milk on my face and clothes.
I ambled to the side of the crowd, blinking rapidly, trying to cry out the mace. At least it wasn't pepper spray, huh?
I noticed a presence behind me, so I turned around to meet the hooded man behind me. His demeanor oozed confidence, and his stance suggested a young, well-built man under the layers of clothing. From here, I could tell that he was obviously significantly taller than I was.
"You're brave for that, but it was stupid to endanger yourself like that." Before I could manage a retort, he sauntered away.
The sound of a gunshot followed.
