•❅──────✧❅✦❅✧──────❅•"Dr. Reid? Someone is waiting out front for you." A woman at the front desk told Lila in the afternoon of the next day.
Lila didn't know many people from Las Vegas, only her grandmother, Diana Reid. She looked around at her team, her eyes landing on her dad. "Lila, go. Miller go with her. We don't know if it's someone dangerous." Lila and Devin stood up at the same time and walked beside each other to the front door.
"You stay in here. Come out if you think something is wrong, I guess."
Lila pushed open the door and stepped outside. A woman with brown hair and blue eyes stood in front of the police department, fidgeting with her fingers. "Um hi?" Lila said though it came out more as a question.
The woman turned to face Lila. She was maybe in her 50s or 60s. "Lila?"
She couldn't recognize who was speaking, the voice had been familiar. "Yeah, that's me." Lila chuckled awkwardly, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. "Do you remember me?" When it finally clicked, she immediately wanted to go inside.
Lydia Fernandez. Her mother.
"What are you doing here?" Lila crossed her arms over her chest, staring at the woman she called her mother. "I thought you'd be a little happier to see me." Lydia said. Lila felt as if she could cry, but she didn't want to feel weak.
"I have a case to work on." Lila turned and started walking back to the door but Lydia grabbed her arm, pulling her back.
"Lila, baby.."
"What do you want?" Lila jerked her arm from her mother's grip. "I wanted to see you." Lydia smiled, reaching her hand out to her daughter. Lila bit her bottom lip, blinking to keep tears from welling in her eyes. "You've had fourteen years to see me. You left dad and I, remember?"
She had her eyes locked on her mother who didn't say anything, Lydia just stood there.
"I'm sorry!" She finally spoke and Lila shook her head, licking her lips. "you can't apologize for the years you were gone. Why did you even leave? Was Dad the problem? Or was I just not enough for you to stay?"
"Do you want to know the truth?" Lila nodded.
She was nervous for what Lydia was about to say, like her words would stab her right in the stomach. "I couldn't handle you. You made me leave." What did I do to make her leave? Lila thought as she felt a tear roll down her cheek. "I have to go. Goodbye."
Lila turned and walked back into the police department, her head down.
"Lils?" She heard Devin say. Lila looked up and met his eyes. "Hey, what's wrong?" Devin set his hand on her shoulder and Lila searched for words to say. "Here I'll go get Spence, okay?" He ran to the back room and moments later Spencer emerged from the door way.
Devin stayed behind to let the two talk, he just watched from afar and JJ joined him after a couple moments.
"What happened?" Spencer cupped his daughters cheeks with his hands. "It was...It was my fault." Lila couldn't catch her breath. She felt guilty, she felt horrible. "Okay, I need to you take a deep breath and then tell me what happened so I can understand."
She closed her eyes.
Inhale. Exhale.
Lila opened her eyes and met her father's soft eyes. "The person who needed to talk to me. It was mom." She paused when Spencer glanced at his feet. "We got into it and then I asked her why she left, she said it was because of me. She couldn't handle me." Spencer wiped the tears that fell onto his daughters cheeks. "Now I feel so stupid for crying, we have a case."
"The others are working on it. You need to focus on you right now. It's okay to cry, honey."
Lila nodded, taking another deep breath. Spencer pulled out his phone, most likely texting one of the team members. "I just told Hotch that we're going to go for a small walk, you need to clear your mind." She nodded and her father pushed the door open.
Spencer wrapped his arm around Lila's shoulder and strolled around the streets around the police department.
"I was thinking that when we finish the case, we could go see your grandmother." Lila smiled. She loved visiting Diana, even if she didn't always remember her. "That'd be nice. I miss her a lot." Spencer nodded. "Yeah, me too." They made their way back to the department, smiling and laughing. Lila was calm, though the thoughts about her mother still ran through her head.
Their laughs ceased when Spencer bumped into another man.
"I'm so sorry, sir." Spencer apologized. The man was slightly shorter than Lila, he was thin with chocolate brown eyes. He looked Lila and Spencer up and down, as if he were studying them. "I'm really sorry." Spencer said again and the man walked off.
Lila met her father's eyes. "Creepy." She said and the entered the police department.
