Ring! The bell rings for recess. I sigh. Last year of this hell. I stand and the class stares at me. Their faces neutral. I leave the room. Freaks.
I walk into the hallway and there's a fight. Fists fly everywhere. I walk past it, my eyes meeting one of the guy's eyes. I look away and my shirt is grabbed from behind. "Dion, you little shit." The guy says. I turn to face them.
The two men from before are now glaring at me. They throw me against the wall. "What gives you the right to look at me?" The guy, I made eye contact with asks. I shrug. He growls and punches me hard in my face. It stings a bit, but it's not bad.
I mock them. "Who taught you to punch? A chicken?" I ask and smirk. The one guy gasps and says. "Hey! Chickens are scary." The other guy looks at the first guy with a look that's asking if he is stupid. They begin to fight each other again. I stand and walk away.
I enter the Cafeteria. Noisy as usual. I walk to the trays and take from the food being served. I sit at my usual seat. It's away from everyone else. It is also in front of a window. I take out my phone and listen to the radio through earphones.
"A man was murdered last night in front of The Red Cross Hospital. Police confirm it is the same killer who killed the other twenty victims. This person is still untraceable and we have no clue yet on how these innocent people were killed." I smile. I'll probably be in the news papers soon and even on TV. I'm getting excited.
I put my phone in an inner pocket of my blazer. I take out my notepad from my bag and cross out the man I killed last night. So far five people knew about Derek out of twenty, so what am I missing? I scan the list. The five people who knew about Derek are connected. I draw a thick line under their names.
Liz Campbell was in a group called Malachite. She said there are many others and even gave me their names so that I could spare her life. She was a mother of two going through a divorce. She lived alone and had a laptop she used to contact the group. I have the laptop. I took out the chip that could have helped the police track me. On that communication device was a group chat and I managed to copy most of the names on the group before they kicked Liz out. All I'm doing is crossing out the names and killing them, but why doesn't most of them know Derek? She and four others did. Maybe they were using a code name for him or something. What would it be?
I close the notebook and put it in my bag. I eat my lunch and throw the trash away and put the tray on the other trays. I walk out of the cafeteria and someone lightly grabs my arm. Their touch is not like the two idiots who were fighting.
I turn around and Bonnie smiles up at me. "Hi." She greets. "Do you need something?" I ask. Bonnie looks nervous. She's always nervous around me so it's nothing new. She nods. "Could you walk me home after school, please. I'm scared the killer will come for me." She says. She has fear in her eyes and her breathing is shallow. I nod. "Of course, We're neighbors so it's fine." I say. She smiles and nods. "Thank you!" She says. She lifts her hands up slightly before letting it down to her sides again. She wants a hug. Uh, this is awkward. "Meet me at the gate." I say and walk away.
After school, I see Bonnie waiting patiently by the gate. She waves goodbye to her friends and they return the gesture, smiles on their faces. Even though her body is small, she moves fast. I walk to her and say. "Let's head home." She looks up at me and nods. She holds her hands in front of her and I keep mine in my pockets.
We are crossing a giant road and the cars zoom past. The wind made her school dress fly up a bit. I look away from her. I am not a pervert or anything so it's awkward. After a few minutes the cars don't appear. I look down the road. The cars are in the distance. We start crossing the road. Bonnie stays close to me. A car driving in the wrong lane races towards us. The driver looks behind her and I realize she's a criminal on the run from the police. The sirens are blaring loudly. I grab Bonnie's arm and run across the road. Her eyes are wide with panic and she almost trips a couple of times. We make it past the car and stand in the middle of the two roads. Bonnie is on her knees, tears in her eyes. Her body is shaking. I help her up, holding her close to me. Her body tenses.
"Bonnie, Are you okay?" I ask her. She nods. I hold her hand and we cross the other road. She keeps her body close to mine. "It's only a crazy driver, don't overreact." I tell her, not looking at her. "I know, it was just scary... If you weren't there I would have died today. Thank you, Dion." She says. I could hear the smile on her face as she spoke. I look down at her and she has red cheeks and a soft smile.
