The First Cut

That first cut changes everything.

You wear long sleeves because you think it's the only way to hide your secret.

When you accidentally get a cut you don't say, 'I cut myself' because you now know what that means.

When you meet someone new, the first thing you do is look at their wrists to see if they'll understand you.

When someone asks if you're okay, you always say I'm fine.

You learn how to lie and get away with it.

You know the best ways to keep secrets.

As you start cutting more, you start to change more.

You wear bracelets now because you've learned it's less suspicious.

You are an expert at putting on makeup to cover scars.

You've learned all the best excuses for not having to wear a bathing suit.

You've learned how to control the nervousness you had during that first cut.

As much as we try to say we're the same, we're not.
