Calum: The Family Man
"Thank you very much, Mr. Smith, I really appreciate that you took time to help me," I thanked my english teacher for helping me on a concept I didn't quite understand. I really tried my best to do well in school to hopefully get a scholarship for college someday.
"It was no problem, Calum, I enjoy helping you and it's very nice to see someone so dedicated to their work. You are a great role model for your peers, and I can tell that you make an impact on them."
"Wow, that means a lot, sir, thanks again."
"Of course, now, I don't want you getting home late!"
"Yes, yes, you're right, of course. I'll see you tomorrow, Mr. Smith!" I called as I exited the door and threw on my light jacket over my shoulders. I exited the school and started my usual walk home from school.
I loved to walk, it gave me a chance to get fresh air and think about my day. I had to write an essay for Geography tonight and do a couple problems in my Maths notebook, plus reading for English. I was usually efficient, so I could get these things done quite easily.
I reached behind my backpack to grab my cell phone to listen to some music when I heard footsteps from a person behind me. I quickly glanced back and noticed a boy in a hoodie, sweatpants, and a beanie about ten feet behind me. He was jogging towards me, so I stopped and moved out of the way while I digged farther in my backpack for my earbuds. He stopped when he reached me, his voice urgent and alerting.
"Can you help me? My friend and I just went jogging and he fell and seems to have broke his ankle! You're the closest person I could find from where he'd fallen!" The boy panicked.
I instantly froze and felt sympathy towards the boy. I checked my watch on instinct and knew that my curfew I set for myself wasn't for another half an hour, but time didn't matter in this case. "Of course I'll help you! Lead the way!"
I followed the boy across the street, down a couple blocks and finally around a corner to the entrance of an alley where another sort-of-familiar boy was sitting against the brick wall clutching his ankle and hissing in pain.
"Harry! Oh my good god, Harry, you're here! My ankle is really swollen, and I - I'm getting dizzy."
"I am, and I brought someone with! We'll help you to the nearest hospital!" The boy who I followed, named Harry responded, then turned to me panickedly. "Do you know where the nearest hospital is?"
"Yeah, I can help you take him there," I responded.
"Okay," Harry looked very frightened. "lets get him up and then you can lead us. Is it far?"
"Not very, just a few blocks south of here."
"Great." He leaned down to help the broken boy up on his one working foot. "Here, babe, put your arm over my shoulder - " Harry started but as soon as he got the boy up, the boy grabbed onto Harry for a hug, to which Harry returned gratefully.
I patiently waited for them to finish, obviously they were in love or partners, and I respected that, but I did need to get home, as much as I wanted to help.
I held my hands behind my back as I waited, smiling at how cute the lovers were, but something made my smile fade quick and a look of horror crossed my face.
I knew this area was a bad one, by an alley and all, but I had no idea what to do, I was frozen in my spot not able to do anything.
Something was running up and down my back, and my first guess was a hand. It ran across my shoulders and down my back in a T shape, then down my arms creating goosebumps on the skin under my jacket.
