Ashton: The Popular Jock
"Good practice today guys!" I shouted over the loud locker room of rambunctious boys. I was the captain of the football team and we were undefeated so far in the season. Playoffs were in two weeks so we needed to be in shape. "Jake, watch your passes and follow through. Thomas, watch your aggressiveness, it can cost us penalties. We are doing really well and we definitely have a chance of bringing home the trophy for the fifth year in a row." Assent was heard or shown across the room.
"Hey Ashton," my best friend Evan changing at the locker beside mine got my attention, "are you going to the mall tonight? Rachel is planning to meet me there so I have to get going." He shut his locker door.
"Yep! I just have to speak to the coach about having a practice on the Saturday before playoffs."
"Okay, I'll see you there! Want to meet out front?"
"Sure!" I followed him out of the locker room after shouting a goodbye to my teammates, after a quick "See you later," we separated and I went to the coach's office.
I left the office five minutes later beaming with pride. My coach agreed to do the practice, told us that afterwards we could go out for pizza or something and told me he was really glad and proud that I am devoted. I couldn't wait for tonight to celebrate for the pre-game.
The sun hung low in the sky as I walked to my car. I checked my watch, it was 4:45. I drove to the mall as fast as I possibly could so my friends wouldn't have to wait as long.
When I found a parking spot and walked to the entrance, Evan wasn't there like he said he would be. There was only a boy with curly hair with a hoodie and beanie smoking against the wall. I stood against the opposite wall, hoping they were just late, which wasn't a surprise.
The smoking boy looked at me and smirked. "You Ashton?" He grumbled out, the cigarette smoke modulating his voice. I ignored him at first, he's probably just another friend of Evan's from a different school and I didn't care in the least about him. "Are you Ashton?" He repeated, suddenly very annoyed.
"Yeah, what's it to you? Are you a friend of Evan's?"
"Yeah, I know him. He told me that he and his buddies went to the back to have a couple drags or somethin' and if they weren't there then they'd be at the alley a few blocks from here 'cause they got kicked out."
"Oh really?"
"I'm not kidding you, man! Let's go find 'em." And with that, he pushed himself off the wall and headed to the back of the mall.
I rolled my eyes but followed anyway. I caught up with the boy and when he sensed my presence he turned around, walking backwards now, giving me a look, which I returned, and offering me a cigarette from his pack. I shook my head and he shrugged, turning back around.
We reached the back, and no, my friends weren't there. I sighed and huffed as we'd have to go to the alley now, and it frustrated me that my friends were so careless sometimes.
"Well, so much for that," The boy, who I still didn't know the name of, said. "Let's go to the alley."
"Yeah, whatever," I spat. I didn't like this boy at all.
"Jeez, what's up your ass?"
"You're stupid attitude, that's what," I retorted.
"I was just trying to help you."
"You can help me with your mouth shut, can't you?"
The boy just held his hands up in surrender and led the way.
