for the first time so far, i'm writing this in first person pov, in the mind of maya; this was a request.

As the best friend of Smiley Riley, as some people call her because of her bright attitude, I, Maya Hunter, see more than the average person does when it comes to that ball of sunshine. Some may call me obsessive, because I aim to protect Riley at all costs. After all, it's the duty of a best friend to do that, to back the other up whenever necessary, which I did with pleasure.
However, I've discovered recently, that Riley has another guardian angel figure in her life, that never leaves her side. Lucas Friar, the Texan that I call a list of fun nicknames? No, not him. Bucky Mc Boing Boing is more my type— but that's another story. At first glance, one might believe it to be Lucas because he was Riley's first crush, first boyfriend, and really just the first of several things.
But I've come to realize that it was all puppy love, the kind that doesn't last or stay for long. Let me explain.
At 17 and 18 years old, my group of friends, including Riley, Lucas, Farkle, Zay, and Isadora, are close to graduating high school; and I must say that we've come a long damn way. It all began from first grade, and there was a Halloween party hosted at the Matthews' residence, at Riley's apartment.
Being her best friend, I was there, obviously. At that party was a bit of a checkpoint for us, because that's when we picked up a new lifelong friend: Farkle Minkus. Upon just taking in our goofy personalities when we met him by the apple bobbing bucket, the genius that we call Farkle immediately claimed his love for both of us, right then, right there.
From that day forward, he stuck by Riley and I as if he were both of our boyfriends, though we never returned his feelings— or so I thought.
It turned out, that Riley and Farkle's relationship was like looking through a microscope. I looked at its surface and saw a one-sided crush based over a steady friendship, but when I zoomed in closer, I caught glance of so much more.
I'll get back to explain more on that later, though. We have more people to string along to the events of our crazy drama that we called our lives.
At the beginning of middle school, a transfer came in, by the name Lucas Friar. A pretty boy he was, and Riley fell for him, within a moment's glance. Call it shallow, and I would agree; they both liked the idea of one another.
Crushing on each other and just staring awkwardly, Riley and Lucas tried for a relationship, which lasted a good few hours— yes, they didn't even make it a full day. Deciding to stay friends, that's what they did. I, unfortunately, couldn't hide my emotions well enough, because Riley found out that I liked Ranger Rick too, causing a whole triangle drama within our friend group.
Now where was Farkle during this? He had began to date Isadora Smackle, his arch nemesis that was of equal, if not more, intellect as him. However, as a boy of science Farkle always would say that opposites attract and alike forces repel, something I would agree with. That being said, his whole relationship with Isadora was meant to fail, if following the laws of science.
Flash forward a bit more, and Lucas suddenly was dating me. Riley was in a mess with a boy named Charlie Gardner, who I, personally thought was a better fit for her than Lucas. But never mind that. One fateful night, New Years Eve, Farkle blabbed that Riley still had feelings for Lucas, and she was suppressing them for me.
That, right there, was when I realized: Holy shit; Farkle and Riley are endgame.
You see, Farkle always claimed that he loved Riley and me equally, up until he began dating Isadora. I noticed that he began his relationship with her after Riley and Lucas got together, meaning he stepped back for Riley. He thought that she would be better off with him— and although it killed him, Farkle was okay with it because he wanted her happy.
