set senior year in high school, plus a little joshaya
—
It was a normal winter afternoon in the Matthews' residence— but it was a little too normal, suspiciously normal. On a daily basis for the wild life of Riley Matthews, there was always drama or some problem that broke out, whether it be life-changing or minor.
The thing was, the day so far hadn't been problematic at all, which frankly scared Riley.
"Maya," the brunette started, catching the attention of her best friend, "is today too good to be true?"
"What do you mean by that, Pumpkin?" Maya raised her eyebrows at her Smiley Riley, questioning where her friend was going.
"Well, for starters, today has been easy; my dad couldn't bother us in school because he's sick, nobody's had a fight or argument, and there haven't been any surprises... It kinda freaks me out," Riley rambled, recollecting the simple and plain events of the day.
"Agreed," a third voice added, undoubtedly belonging to their friend, Farkle, who plopped down beside the girls on the bay window. "Nothing much has happened, but there's bound to be some type of dilemma that'll shut this good day down."
"I think we have one coming our way," Maya remarked, her blue eyes darting up to spot Lucas climbing through the window, followed with Isadora and Zay. "Whenever all of us are together, shit goes down real quick."
"Maya! Language!"
The blonde smirked, "You know I don't care and will continue to be your favorite bad influence, don't you, Honey?"
Riley heaved a sigh, scooting down the window so that everybody could fit in her room. Huh, she thought, she has a point; something has to go wrong in five, four, three, two...
As if on cue to her thoughts, her bedroom door swung open to reveal her Uncle Josh standing at the doorway.
"Oh— you have company?" He pointed out the obvious, nodding to the group of teenagers.
"When does she not, Uncle Boing?" Maya answered swiftly, using the nickname she had for him. The same way she always did, the blonde batted her eyelashes— and at this point, it was a habit for her.
"True." Josh sat down on the edge of Riley's bed, as there was little to no room left on her bag window.
"What are you doing back here? I thought you were boarding at the university," Lucas queried.
Josh turned to face his niece. "Do they not know I'm staying here now?"
"They do now," Riley shrugged.
"What! Well, Pumpkin, you know what that means: Maya's moving in with you!" An enthused Maya announced in third person, a smile spreading across her face.
"Wait, wait, wait— you still like this guy? I thought... I thought you and Lucas...?" Zay mused, confusion clear in his face and tone.
"Yeah, I thought that too," Lucas murmured under his breath, a slight edge in his voice. He stared between Maya and Josh, eyebrows furrowed. The Texan meant to not be heard by anyone but himself, but Riley heard— and she was beginning to foresee what trouble was yet to unravel.
"Ah, the triangle has risen yet again!" Isadora exclaimed, pointing down the line of friends. "Except this time, I think it's much more than a three-angled shape."
"Uh... w-what are you talking about?" Stuttered Riley, a bit nervous at the mention of the never-ending triangle drama.
The whole situation was a mess, and the group finally had a break when they got back from the ski trip. But here it was, resurfacing again.
