This takes place when Lucas is trying to choose between Maya and Riley, aka freshman year of high school. Set in school, not ski lodge.

"Riley Minkus, how 'bout that?" Farkle laughed, attempting to take his best friend's mind off of the triangle for once. "I like it!"
The brunette glared at the boy, her brown eyes meeting his blue ones. But she couldn't keep up her angry facade. Two seconds, and her narrowed eyes faltered and she burst into a fit of giggles.
The two teenagers were sitting in Riley's room, at her bay window, the window where they talked about anything and everything. To anyone else, it was just a window seat, but for Riley and everyone who really knew her, it was sacred.
"What, you think after all this, it'll be me and you?" Riley asked teasingly. "Hmm, I don't know. Maybe I should just forget about Lucas and be with you."
At that, Farkle's heart couldn't help but to skip a bit quicker. He knew she was joking, of course, but god, how those words affected him. It killed him, to see that not only was Riley not his, but she wasn't even happy either.
What she didn't understand is that he, the best friend who got too attached, had taken a step back so that Lucas could make her happy... Instead of him. Farkle wanted more than anything to be the one to hold Riley in his arms, to hold hands with her through passing periods in school, to be more than what they were- friends.
But that was selfish. Even more than his feelings for Riley, Farkle wanted her to be happy, nothing less. She deserved it, more than anyone, he felt.
So because he stepped back for her and became quite unhappy with himself, he strives to keep pushing Riley towards Lucas, refusing to her her step back. He didn't want her to make the sameness mistake, to have to watch him with someone else. Their situations were similar, Farkle and Lucas liking the same girl, and now Riley and Maya liking the same boy.
Farkle wanted Riley to win; he just didn't let anyone know.
Then a small hand waved in front of his blurred vision.
"Hellooo? Earth to Farkle?" Riley teased with a grin, trying to break Farkle out of his daze.
In response, Farkle chuckled,"Sorry. I guess I was just thinking a lot, you know? So I just zoned out."
"And what exactly is going on in your genius mind?" Riley asked, propping her chin in her hand as she sat crisscrossed.
You! He wanted to shout. He wanted to tell her everything, about his feelings, his situation, how confused and hurt he was. So he went with half of the truth.
"Everything, honestly." Farkle watched the brunette shift, like she knew what was coming and was preparing for the conversation to take a turn. And it was. "Why did you make me do it?"
He was referring to when he informed everyone that Riley still had feelings for Lucas. Instead of heeding Riley's plea to stay silent, he announced, in the middle of Lucas and Maya's date and before Riley's own date, that Riley still liked Lucas. He simply told the truth, which was something Riley couldn't.
This, of course, created another wave of destruction over the friends. Maya's face fell immediately, even though she too suspected Riley's feelings were lingering, Lucas put up a face of both hope and fear at the same time, and everyone else? They all just looked confused, like they didn't know what to do at the moment.
That's because nobody knew. No one moved for a moment, then Riley dragged Farkle aside, where they argued. But this happened two nights ago, so naturally, Riley and Farkle were okay again. However, the rest of the group still held tensions and a whole lot of awkwardness.
