Today at school I saw Uyu in the hallway. I dropped my books and pencils. Which seemed a bit of a dèjá Vu moment as he knelt to help me clean up the mess. Again. He asked me about my day as we picked up the contents of my backpack. We walked together to our art class, and I sat next to him. After all our classes I noticed him stalling so we could walk outside together. Mom was late in picking me up again so I texted her I found a ride home Uyu decided to walk with me instead of taking the bus even though it was so cold, and the dark was creeping in so early. We talked about so many things together. Music, food, movies, Philly, New York City, our favorite trips. We laugh at the same things. It was almost unsettling how we would be so passionate in our speech in the same ways. When I realized we walked past my house again we were at the lake a few blocks from my house and sat on a bench under a streetlight. I checked my phone but no new texts came through so I put my phone back in my pocket.Feeling the evening air blow against my neck I started buttoning up my coat. He told me about his colorful family. We talked about his mother. She seems like a truly amazing person. She works from home part-time mornings, runs the household while her husband works 50+ hours a week, and she is attending night classes for a bachelor's degree in business. She loves to bake, and cook amazing homemade dinners almost every night. I love the way he spoke about her. His words were full of admiration and love.
The wind blew over the smell of Uyu's hair. Something like sandalwood. When the sun started to set he got a call from his mom and had to be on his way home. But then he asked if we could walk home together from school again tomorrow. I am looking forward to it. Uyu is a different kind of friend. He seems to fill the slight hollowness in my chest. I checked the time on my phone when he walked away. Just an email from Amazon in my notification bar. It was getting kind of late to be out on a winter day at 5:37 pm. However, I decided to write in my journal before walking home.
