"The battle is finished..." I mumbled to myself. I turned and saw Mine and Akame both approaching, with hoods pulled over their faces.
They settled a glare onto Seryu. Mine was the first to speak. "(F/n). What's going on here?"
"I brought Seryu over to our side," I explained simply.
"But why?!? You should just kill her!" She responded.
"Why would I do that? She could be a very helpful asset on missions." I said.
Mine's shoulders tensed up a bit. "Well... What if she betrays us?"
"In that case, I'll take responsibility for her actions."
"But responsibility won't be enough if someone ends up dying by her hands," Mine said.
I wasn't sure how to respond to that. Now that I was thinking with a clear head, there was every chance that this was some elaborate plot by her to simply kill us off. After all, Tatsumi was the one who killed Captain Ogre, her mentor.
"(F/n)... saved me..." Seryu suddenly spoke, her voice soft and shaky and her gaze aimed at the floor. "If you are his valued comrades, then I cannot see myself betraying you!"
"Even so," Akame cut in. "We cannot trust you, even if we wanted to. Also, we shouldn't be speaking about this out in the open."
I looked around us and, indeed, we were right there in the open with the rest of the townspeople.
"Ah, shoot." Mine rubbed to top of her head through her hood. "Come on, we'll sort this out elsewhere."
I started to rush off with the group towards the tree line. "Wait!" I heard an old voice behind me. The man we had just saved was standing there. "You... You're Night Raid, correct?" He asked.
I hesitated a moment, "What if I am?" I asked.
"Thank you, for saving me. I cannot do anything as ridiculous as offer you compensation, but I can at least thank you." He smiled.
"...Right. Of course." I said, turning and starting to head to the treeline with the other three.
"We cannot take Seryu to the base," Akame stated. "That being said, we do need to tell Boss what happened."
"Ok. I think I saw an abandoned wood cabin up ahead. We'll take shelter in that and decide what to do with Seryu." Mine said.
The three of us made our way to the said wood cabin. It was old looking, but at least had a full rooftop. The four of us all stood around, seemingly keeping our distance from each other in the small shelter.
"So, (f/n). Explain yourself." Akame said.
"...During the fight, I found Seryu hiding away inside that cart. And she looked... absolutely pathetic." Seryu flinched at my description of her. "I wanted to help her. The empire seemed to be a toxic place for her to be, so I wanted to get her out of there. I thought the only way I could do that was to have her join us."
"If you really thought she needed help, you should have just killed her and put her out of her misery," Mine said bluntly.
"But what would be the point? We could use her as a member of Night Raid, and she could turn into a valuable force for the team." I said.
"Sure, there are plenty of people who could be valuable forces on our team. Like Benjamin, or Esdeath. But that's not a reason to try and recruit someone." Mine said.
"I know... But... Seryu is a different case. When I found her, my frustration came up again, and I couldn't go without getting rid of that." I said.
