Chapter 29 - Blades

We were on the cusp of escaping from the clutches of the mightiest within the empire. We were on the Air Manta and quickly flying away. But it wouldn't enough, as Budo chased after us. He charged up a lightning attack and launched it out. It formed in the sky as a massive cloud of lightning. 

"Damnit! We can't dodge it! Everyone, take cover!" Najenda shouted. Everyone ducked under anything they could as the manta was struck with lightning and shot down. The air manta fell to the ground with us on top of it. We turned and saw Budo approaching us with Esdeath not far behind. 

"Everyone, we're gonna fight!" Najenda shouted. 

"I'll fight Esdeath!" Akame shouted, drawing out her Murasame and dashing ahead. 

"I got your back!" Leone shouted, running up with her. The two of them engaged with the ice queen general. 

Akame slashed her sword in a quick motion and followed up with a stab. Esdeath rolled around the first slashed and ducked the second attack. Leone followed up in her beast form with her claws. 

I saw the fight start between those three and turned towards the other enemy in front of me: General Budo. 

"Impudent whelps..." He said as he approached us. 

"I'm with you, (f/n)." Mine said. "We got this." 

"Right..." I mumbled, not exactly confident about our odds against these two. "Benjamin is probably fast approaching. We should finish this up fast." 

"We got this!" Sheele approached us as well, ready to fight. 

"Seryu. You and Koro should help Akame and Leone with Esdeath!" Najenda said. 

"Oh! Y-Yes sir!" Seryu said saluting with her metal arms and moving to battle. 

I dragged my Blade of Destruction through the ground before going into the fight. Budo stepped forward and prepared a punch for me. I ducked under it and slashed at his legs. And, it made contact! I chipped the armor that he wore a bit. It wasn't much, but it was progress. 

He brought up his hand and charged it with a bit of lightning, before moving to try and hit me. Luckily, Mine covered for me and fired off a shot, interrupting the general. 

Sheele came in next with her scissors. Budo dashed to the side of her would-be attack and pushed his hands forward, sending electricity straight into her. 

"Sheel!" Mine shouted. 

Budo seemed to be fighting more seriously now as he faced the majority of Night Raid. He turned around to me and sent a very quick punch my way, which made contact. I got a bit of shock which left me stunned as I fell to the ground. 

Mine started firing at budo, now left alone as Sheele and I were shocked and on the ground. Budo quickly approached her and got ready to hit her too. But luckily, there was one last member who could fight him. 

Tatsumi came from the air in Incurio's armor and kicked Budo. Just barely, he brought up his arm and blocked it, causing Tatsumi to go flying past him. Sheele and I got a chance to recover thanks to him. We stood up and got ready to fight again. Budo suddenly found himself confronted with four members of Night Raid. He looked around, finding himself on the defensive suddenly. 

These two, who caused three of us so much trouble, were now on the defensive in an all-out-battle in a dirt field. 

"We've got this!" Mine shouted, bringing up her rifle and getting ready to fire. "We've come a long way, (f/n)." She said, turning to me nearby her. 

I nodded, "Right. Let's finish this. Maybe we can go on that date that you wanted to do?" 

She blushed a bit and smiled, "Maybe. That would be nice." She turned to me with a smile on her face, "Thanks, (f/n)." 

Then, I heard and arrow being fired. It was faint, and I brushed it off in my head. But that was a mistake. 

In the next moment, I saw an arrow lodge itself into Mine's chest. Her rifle fell to the ground, before I saw several more arrow wounds appear on her body, seemingly out of nowhere. They were all over her, many of them in fatal spots. 

I moved down to catch her body, my eyes wide with shock. It all happened in an instant, but it felt like an eternity. I could almost see it happening in slow motion. 

"MINE!" I heard Sheele shout. All I could do was stare down at her body as I watched the blood and life rapidly drain out of it. All I did was watch in silence with her in my arms. My eyes were wide with shock. 

"About time you got here, Benjamin." I heard Esdeath shout. 

Everyone turned and saw him standing there. And yet, my eyes stayed down at Mine. 

"Hey... Mine..." I mumbled. "Mine...? Are you..." My already soft voice trailed off. I was tuning out everything else around me. 

And then, she moved. Her hand gripped around the handle of her rifle. She brought it up in one small movement and quickly fired it at Budo. Miraculously, despite having just been shot, her accuracy was still amazing. 

A large, fast, and powerful bullet made it's mark on the general. He was pushed far back by it and went flying along the ground, blood flying from his body. 

"Heh... nice pinch..." Mine's voice was raspy and soft. Her expression was smug, but her eyes looked tired. 

Everyone stared in silence for a moment as Mine's body went limp. I froze up; my body refused to move as I held her. She was dead. 

"Don't miss this chance! Get him!" Najenda shouted, targeting the now injured Budo. To their left, Benjamin was notching another arrow. He wasted no time in firing it into my direction. 

I clutched Mine in my arms and rolled out of the way. My expression was still one of shock as I looked down at her now lifeless body. 

"What the hell are you still holding her for? Don't tell me you two are together?" Benjamin asked, a smug and somewhat exhausted expression on his face. "Just die!" He fired off several more arrows in my direction. 

I stood up with Mine in my arms and started dashing around them. It was all instinct. My mind was blank. 

Then, in one moment, I looked down at my hands. They held my Imperial Arms, but were also covered with the blood of Mine, the girl who came to the arena to save me at the cost of her own life. 

In that same moment, a moment torrented by emotions that I didn't fully understand, I made a decision. 

"The one who sacrificed their life for me, I won't allow them to die. At the cost of my soul and spirit, I call forth the power of my Imperial Arms." I began mumbling an incantation. 

My mind cleared a bit as I brought up my Blade of Creation while holding Mine in my other hand. 

"Trump card: Soul sacrifice!" I shouted. I felt a piece of myself leaving my body. It was an odd feeling, one that I never got used to. It was like my entire being was being pulled apart like taffy. Most importantly, I could feel it going to Mine. My soul was being sacrificed in order to save her. It was perfect. 

Then, my blades shattered...
