6 months earlier.
Aria's eyes roamed around the club as she took a sip from her recently refilled glass. She had agreed to meet the client and his partner here, but now she wondered whether she had gotten the wrong club.
The client's partner owned the club, and the client had told her he would feel better if they met there. Well, at the apartment above the club. They had said they would meet her at the club, and then they would go up to talk further about the case. It was another pro bono case, and Aria didn't really mind.
Her eyes roamed one last time, before her phone pinged. It was the client.
Jake: Where are you?
Aria: I'm at the club DeNiro's, Aria wrote back, It is the one on 22nd Street and Kensington Avenue right?
Jake: Oh, sorry Aria. I forgot there was another DeNiro's. It also happens to be a gay club, so I get why you went there.
Aria: I hope I didn't offend you by assuming this.
Jake: What? No, of course not. I'll send you the location.
Aria felt stupid and embarrassed. She gulped down the rest of the whiskey, and turned to pay when something caught her eye.
What's Rae doing here-
Her eyes widened as she saw Rae kiss the guy he had been talking to. She was close enough to know it was definitely Rae, but she couldn't make out who the other guy was. Without actually realising what she was doing, Aria snapped a couple of pictures. She sat frozen as the two of them went towards the back, where there were more secluded booths that were each separated by curtains. She knew this because she had come here before with some of her friends, when they hadn't really been in the mood to be hit on by other guys.
She felt her breath quicken. That son of a bitch. He had just made the biggest mistake of his life.
Present Day.
Rae sat up straighter.
"I have no idea what you are talking about," he said.
Aria's eyes narrowed. "You mean to tell me it wasn't you at that club?"
"No, Aria, I wasn't at DeNiro's."
"I never mentioned any DeNiro's."
Rae paled ever so slightly. Aria's nostrils flared. "Now do you know?"
"It isn't what you think it is-"
Aria raised an eyebrow, daring him to continue with the lie.
"So you expect me to believe that you didn't do what we both know you did in DeNiro's. I play with lies for a living, Rae, you can't lie to me.""It wasn't what it looked like Aria," Rae said, standing up. It was either to put distance between them, or that he couldn't bear to look at Aria right in the eye. Either reason ignited a small feeling of satisfaction in Aria.
Smart move.
"What did it look like Rae? 'Cause I have a photo right here," Aria said showing him her phone.
If Aria had thought Rae was pale then, now he looked like he saw a ghost.
"I was drunk and not in the best state of mind, Aria. Believe me, it just happened."
"So you mean to tell me you weren't the one who leaned in for the kiss first?" Till now, neither of them had raised their voices. Aria's voice was cold, while Rae's was slightly pleading. Aria had a feeling it wouldn't stay that way for long.
