"Want to try the Jacuzzi?" Stephen asked. He stood and began unbuttoning his shirt.
"I've never been in one before."
"You're going to love it."
Feeling the bubbles massage every one of my muscles made me feel like a marmallow. "I never want to leave this."
Stephen laughed, handing me a glass of wine.
"What's this for?" I sipped the drink, it tasted sweet yet bitter, and a hint of something exotic. I liked it.
"It's to celebrate. You're officially one of us and I haven't been able to enjoy it."
"I'm pretty sure you've enjoyed it already." I winked.
"I don't mean like that. We can finally be together." He smiled.
I sat silent for a moment, trying to hold my tongue, but it was itching to say what I'd been thinking for a while. "Why couldn't you two take me away before?" I swirled the glass, not wanting to look up at him.
"We had to wait until the transition started."
"But why?" That was louder than planned, but my emotions had been in turmoil over this for a while now and I was sick of it. "Why leave me stuck there, in that hell hole? You knew what they were doing, knew I was trapped. You left me there rotting. Why?"
He looked away, his golden eyes turning rusty coloured.
"Tell me why!" I threw the glass at a wall, which got his attention. I couldn't believe how much anger I'd been holding onto until I heard it smash.
"There was a chance..." He paused for a moment. "There was a chance that you wouldn't turn. Even with the connection, there was still a chance, because you were born through humans."
"So if I hadn't turned you would have left me there forever?"
"If we had gotten you out of there, you wouldn't have turned, you had to be stressed and broken. If you had been with us, you would never have changed."
"So you let them break me? What if I had given up? What if I had given in to the temptation of death?"
"I knew you wouldn't."
"I would have. That night, I had planned to do it, that's what set it off, the wish of death. If my parents hadn't called an ambulance..." I stopped and looked him in the eyes, letting his imagination finish the sentence for me.
"They didn't." He had no tone.
"What?"
"Ezra did. He was on shift and always made the route pass your house. He realised something was wrong and sent me a message to put the call through."
I didn't know what to say. I was so angry at them both, but then a thought hit me. If I hadn't become a vampire and they had taken me in anyway, I would never have been able to be with them, no one wants to out live their love, especially not like that. And if I'd stayed there and not turned, I would have eventually left that place and found my own life. It was really the only logical choice. "Fine, but on a different note, you lied to me."
"What do you mean?" He looked guilty, he knew what I meant.
"You told me Ezra couldn't wait, you lied. He's never been with anyone before."
He drank the rest of his wine and set down the glass, then stretched. "I'm so tired, I might just head to bed."
"Oh no, you aren't going anywhere." I pushed myself over and straddled him, giving him a stern look.
