"You look like a fucking idiot."
From my place, kneeling on the top of the truck cab, I deadpanned whilst looking at Ash, who was lying flat against the top of the trailer.
"Shut up and put your damn mask on." He replied bitterly, sneering as I left him be, sliding down and back through the window I had climbed out of.Eiji had suggested I wear a medical mask along with my hood, as an extra measure to conceal my identity. Ash hadn't wanted me to come, but once I found out the Japanese boy was going, he didn't have leg to stand on.
"Pardon me..." I grunted as I climbed over Eiji, squeezing myself to fit in the middle. I was stuck sitting on the center console, but I didn't mind. At least I was a part of it.
"Okay, last check. Got your guns?" Shorter glanced to each of us in turn, and we nodded. "We've got gas, Ash is up top...Don't like you not having a seatbelt, but it should be fine..."This'll be quick. A drive-by...
My nerves were at an all time high, but I thought I was doing a pretty good job of hiding it. Squashed between Shorter and Eiji, my pulse spiked when the engine roared to life, and the former pounded his fist against the cab ceiling.
"Hold on tight, man!"It didn't take a genius to realise that the pineapple head wasn't a good driver. He'd even mentioned it before, stating he was a much better biker. Still, I couldn't help but wonder if he even had a license.
"We'll get pulled over before we even get to Club Cod at this rate..." I muttered, having to awkwardly raise my leg so he could switch gears."Nah, don't worry about it. Most of the cops are lounging around at my place anyway. Besides, it's not far. Don't worry your pretty little head about it." Flushing, I didn't exactly have time to dwell on it as we screeched around a corner, causing me to tip up against Eiji.
Is Ash still even up there?! I would've flown off by now!
"Th..there's the club!" The ravonet exclaimed, helping me back into an upright position and pointing towards a small gathering of people up ahead. Sure enough, there was Papa, several body guards starting to move into a defensive formation around him.
My hand instinctively moved to grasp the gun in my jacket pocket, but I couldn't pull it out. He was right there, getting closer by the second, but I just wasn't able to move. Gunfire began to drown out the sound of the engine, guards dropping like flies. When Papa fell to the ground, clutching his arm, I wasn't sure how to feel. Relief, worry, anger. A whole array of mixed emotions.
"Get down!" I didn't have much time to follow Shorter's harsh instruction before he shoved my head down, right before a round was shot into the cabin. I looked to the right, and froze solid.
Freddy..?
There Arthur was, smirk on his face as we passed the apartment window. His grunts were aiming higher now, but he was just standing there. Our eyes met, and that smirk of his dropped, but we had already driven past. A much louder bang sounded, and the truck began to swerve and sway, the tire having been blown by a shower of bullets.
"Fucking shit..!" Shorter tried his absolute best to stay in control, but there was no point. Even a professional driver wouldn't have been able to keep that machine on the road after that. I squeezed my eyes shut and braced for impact, the only thing stopping me from being thrown through the windshield when it happened being the boss' arm, which had, at some point, been stuck out in front of me.
Glass showered over the three of us, my right forearm taking the brunt of it, instead of my face, though the whiplash felt the worst. Groaning, I pulled my arms away and glanced to Eiji first, who seemed to be in shock, then over to Shorter. When I saw red, my original panic evolved into something more, and I grabbed his arm, trying to lean in over him.
