Chapter 9: A Promise

Y/N's POV

People have been in and out of my room. Even Doctor Candy. But no matter who entered and left, none of them could get close to me. I kept my hands over my ears. My breathes were uneven and my chest felt like it was tightening. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. I couldn't even write no more. The journal sat on the side of me, open to the pages I just wrote. And I know I left on something...I couldn't finish my thought. What is even happening?

Before I could answer my own question I could see the door open. My eyes met with tiny legs and a tiny figure. My eyes look up to finally meet blue eyes. Anna's blue eyes. She slowly walks over and I shake my head from side to side. She stops a few feet away from me before bending down. Her eyes went back and forth between my own. Her eyebrows furrowed and she tilted her head. She looked...scared. Nervous. Worried. I don't know. But I only just kept shaking my head.

"Y/N, what's going on?" Anna's voice asks. I keep shaking my head from side to side. She goes to reach out her arm but I try to back up to the wall. She pulls back her hand and I stop trying to scoot further away. "Y/N, come on kid. What happened? You can trust me. Everyone's really worried. I'm worried." I look away from her blue eyes, closing mine instantly. For a few moments it's silent in the room and then I feel arms wrap around me. A yelp escapes my lips till I hear a soft humming melody.

I slowly began to uncover my ears, hearing the humming a bit better. Slowly, I open my eyes and notice Anna's legs to the side of me. I close my eyes for another second and realize Anna's holding me close to her. She's the one humming...

Screams echo through the room as I jump awake feeling arms on my shoulders. My eyes burst open to meet a figure in front of me. Darkness surrounded the room but instantly I knew it was Anna. I could barely make out her eyes but I knew she was looking back and forth between mine.

"You okay?" She asked, her voice in an undertone. I couldn't think straight, feeling my chest go up and down, fast. My breathes were uneven and before I knew it her arms were wrapped around me and we were leaning up against the wall. My head lay on her chest as a soft melody escaped her lips. It sounded beautiful. I haven't heard humming like this ever in my life and right now it felt peaceful. It felt comforting, something I haven't felt in ages. And after a while the humming stopped as I my breathing felt normal.

"You wanna talk about your dream?" Anna asked, her voice a whisper. I stayed silent for a moment, not sure if I should or not, but then I heard her speak once more. "It helps to talk about it...Plus it seemed pretty scary considering you were whimpering and crying in your sleep." I stay silent for a couple more minutes before finally letting my lips part.

"It's nothing...Just stupid dreams,"I whisper back, closing my eyes.

"It doesn't seem like nothing Y/N. You can trust me."

A sigh escapes my lips gently. "...Fine. I was getting hurt."

"Hurt? You mean like how you got those bruises all over your arms."

"And my back, stomach, face, legs...Yeah, that's what I mean." Silence takes over us as snore escapes throughout the room. The both of us glance over to the bed that's occupied by a familiar ginger. I bite my lip and look back to the tiny brunette in the dark. I feel a hand grab a hold of mine, instantly knowing it's Anna's cold hands. I allow it, feeling her thumb rub back and forth on the top of my hand.

"I can't imagine what it's been like, but know it will get better."

"Will it?"

"I'm sure it will...eventually. And if not, you got me and Birttany even if she does sleep a lot and comes off as a bad bitch. She really does care and I do too-" The girl pauses, shifting in her seat on the mattress we sit on. "And know that no matter what, I'm here. Both of us for every step of the way.

"Every step of the way?" There was a silence they entered the room. I watched Anna as she stared back at me, a smile tugging on her lips in the darkness.

"Yes. I promise you. Every step of the way." For a moment I look away from her then I lift up my hand, making a fist but putting up my pinkie finger. A soft chuckle escapes the girl as I feel her pinkie interlock with my own. "Pinkie promise."

"You can't ever break a pinkie promise."

"I don't ever plan on it, kid."

"Y/N? Can you hear me?" Anna's voice fills the air as my eyes open. I keep my head on her chest, not daring to move and I don't think she is either. "Do you wanna tell me what h-happened?" I stayed silent for another moment before nodding my head up and down slowly, feeling her shirt move along with my head.

"A g-girl tried to h-hurt herself." It went quiet. Anna didn't speak and I closed my eyes a second, seeing the quick images of the girl flash through my mind. I open my eyes and stare straight ahead. "It re-reminded me of when I tr-tried to...to-"

"Shh, it's okay. It's okay," Anna cute me off. I felt her arm pull me a bit closer before feeling a gentle kiss to the top of my head. It felt weird. Something I haven't felt for a long while. Or that I can remember. I bite my lip, keeping my gaze straight ahead, feeling Anna's head rest against mine. "You told me once that you tried to do it several times and each time you couldn't succeed. You then proceeded to tell me that maybe it was okay that it didn't work because you wouldn't be able to experience all that you have. That you wouldn't be able to draw or make people smile. Or show people that even though there's pain in life, that pain can turn into beauty... And I know you don't remember those right now...But sooner or later you're going too and I'm going to be there every step of the way as long as you want me to be."

I lifted my head up off of her shoulder, turning my head to look at her. For a moment my eyes catch a glimpse of her side profile. I just look it over and over before finally seeing her turn her head, our eyes finally locking. I switched back and forth, before finally speaking.

"Every step of the way?" She nodded her head up and down. I bit my lip before wrapping my arms around her quickly. There's a slight hesitation that's barely noticeable but she wraps her arms around me, a sudden comfort and welcoming feeling embraces me. I close my eyes a moment before whispering, "I want you to be...For every step of the way."

Silence filled the room once again and before I knew it, a soft melody filled the air once more. I pulled away slightly and leaned back up against the wall. "Will you stay...a little bit longer?" Anna continues humming as she turns and our eyes lock. A soft smile spreads to her lips as she nods her head up and down. She reaches up her arms and I almost instantly move towards her. Before I knew it my head was resting on the girl's shoulder listening to her soft hums...
