Chapter 4: Angel of Music
As we entered the front doors of the Opera House, I was completely astonished. My mother had shown me drawings of the rooms and the elaborate marble and gold statues which lurked every corner, but nothing could compare to this moment. No drawing or picture on Earth could account for every gold lace, and satin trim. This beautiful chapel of melodies was my new home. I began to stand up straighter, and arched my neck as Meg introduced me to her friends.
There were tons of "Yes, sir," "Yes, I am Christine Daae's daughter, Juniper," "How do you do" and, most importantly, "Yes, I was quite fond of my mother as well." My mind felt boggled as Meg twirled me around the lobby, from person to person, patron to patron, and eligible bachelor to the next. When the meet-and-greet was completed, her eyes gallivanted to my weary face and, in too much of a rush; she motioned my body to the stairs. "Well June, I suppose I should show you your room."
Finally, a peaceful sleep, something that was long overdue since my last dreadful encounter with the villain of nightmarish slumber. I followed Meg up one flight of satin, red stairs as she led me through countless hallways and rooms; and then, finally, we arrived at my dorm room.
Meg hesitated for a moment, and then handed me my luggage. "Aren't you coming inside?" I asked as she turned her back on me to leave.
"No...uh...I'm afraid that I am terribly busy for the rest of the night. Nothing can harm you in this room. It was your mother's." My mother's room? I peered inside, but my eyes were instantly stricken with darkness.
"Oh, then there's no doubt in my mind that harm shall follow while my angel is here." Meg's feet stopped and she turned her face toward my direction. "There is no such thing as an angel...of music, light, or darkness."
"My mother is an angel" I said sadly as gravity pulled my face to my chest. Meg's facial expression regained its composure. "Ah, yes. That is different. Your mother is an angel, the only angel you'll ever need, the only angel who will protect you from harm. Remember that. I love you. Good night." She walked away and left me in darkness once more. I grabbed a candle, which was lying on the floor beside the door and, with one brief flicker of a match, illumination was welcomed inside.
I grabbed my suitcases and closed the door behind me. Instant relief followed as I noticed some of my mother's gowns sprawled out onto the bed. Had she left everything the way it was when she escaped? Every article of clothing looked as if it were forced into its position, like my mother had left out these clothes for a reason, as if she knew I would be coming someday to occupy them.
I sat on my bed contemplating this, but decided that it wasn't important. I began to sing a familiar melody my mother had always sung me to sleep with. Then suddenly a man's voice followed behind mine and matched each note I had attempted.
The voice was extremely unfamiliar, but absolutely beautiful. The melody this man sung to me was unique in every chord. Each note sent shivers up my spine...I wanted to see this man's face, for a voice like that must reside deep within the body of a striking young gentleman ; but fear rushed over me first as the voice stopped its song and spoke to me.
"Juniper Daae."
That was all he spoke and then the voice was gone. I instantly opened my door and peered out into the long hallway, but no one was there.
The next morning I sought out Meg to question what had occurred to me the night before. "Meg, men aren't allowed to venture near the west wing of dorms, right?"
"The men are confined to the East wing of dorms and security watches throughout the night in case one decides to travel over here. Why?"
My voice trembled as I spoke the words. "I heard a man's voice last night, and it...well it seemed as if he was taunting me to come near him...to come with him. His voice was beautiful, mesmerizing." Meg's expression went blank.
"Oh no...it's happening again..."
