Chapter 8: Track Down This Murderer

Phantom's POV:

"The fire was all-consuming. The fire within the Opera house, the fire within her betrayal to me. Like a match to a candlestick filled to the brim with liquor and gasoline, my "Don Juan Triumphant" was set ablaze; the Opera that had set these bargains and deaths in motion.

"The chandelier, now helpless on the Opera's coal-colored seats, had embraced the oxygen within the air and exploded into millions of tiny beautiful, and frightening stimuli of light and fire. Screams grasped onto each other and raced throughout the trafficked hallways and blood, burnt corpses. Murder. A murderer. I was an abandoned, loving, hate-filled murderer now. Christine, oh why, Christine? Why did that frightening, passionate girl have to betray me so?

"The fire that had started the wave of panic had also allowed her and me to escape to my underground layer. I was now her captor. Against her freewill, I had led her down once more to seize her hand in marriage. However, you know who she chose..."

"Raoul."

"Yes...Raoul. But not a day later, she had returned to me, asking for forgiveness, asking for closure and peace."

"But you made a deal with her instead."

"I sure did. Her voice, virginity, and...her child, all in exchange for an ending to my hauntings."

"You would no longer disturb her or Raoul."

"As long as she had promised me these three things, which she did. It didn't matter, though. My worries did not concern Raoul or Christine; they revolved around the hunters who wanted me dead. They tracked me down, you know. They hunted me and sought out every corner of the Opera house. But did they find me?"

"No, they didn't Erik, because my mother helped you hide."

"Yes, dear child. Your mother was very gracious to me."

"You had made a deal with her as well."

"You have such a good memory, dear. If she spread the word that I had escaped the Opera house, and had hid my real location, then I would give her a piece of Christine's voice."

"But she died months after the compromise..."

"Yes, sadly, she had. However, you were born, and that compromise was now carried over to you."

"But I am still not enough. I am no 'Christine Daae?'"

"When I had no more pupil to teach, and your mother had passed away, who did I choose to center my world and musical studies around, hm?"

"Me, of course. I'm sorry if I bother you, but I do enjoy hearing the story over and over. My favorite part is when you mention me, Phantom."

"Yes, child, I know. You're just like your mother. Carlotta was completely egotistical, before and after she decided to save me, and you know the price I had to pay was enormous. Now go to sleep, Felicity. Dream of music and serenity."
