Chapter 14: Why Have You Brought Me Here?
Juniper's POV:
The masked apparition soared its weightless body toward me, but my shivering frame froze. As he revealed his hand from under his cloak, a single red rose balanced on his palm. He gestured the fragrant flower toward me and spoke with such intensity that I might have fainted, "I love you, but you will never love me, because you will never know me." In trepidation, I took a heavy step backwards, falling into one of his traps. "And now, my dear, you are here with me." The figure stepped toward me, but then froze. A flicker of recognition swept across his face and his smiled lightly at me. "Do not fear, Juniper, I am an angel. You will never see me, but I shall follow you wherever you go. Take care, child." A shadow engulfed him as I stood there in the empty hallway. Did I know this man?
"Juniper...Juniper, wake up! We have arrived." To where, I thought as I sat up from the carriage's pew.
I regained consciousness and realized the destination we had arrived to. I had also remembered the dream I had left, and the man, or angel, who had left me in this dream world. I gave it no more than a seconds thought as the carriage reached the steps of the Opera Populaire, my new home.
Looking outside the carriage window I noticed a pale-skinned, blonde-haired woman approaching the caravan. I only guessed that this lady was Meg Giry, my new guardian. She motioned her stealthy hand to the driver in an attempt for him to open my door. As he gestured his hand toward mine, my eyes locked onto hers and, for the first time, since my mother's death, I felt peace. She was an extension of my mother, it seemed.
She replied to my awkward grin with a sympathetic smile of her own. This smile left trails upon her cheek and filled in the gaps where her laugh lines resided; and on her face was a wondrous bewilderment. Had she known who I was? I thanked the driver and he left Meg and me standing in front of the Opera house, awkward and silent. She finally broke the silence with a brief giggle and casually grabbed my hand.
"Hello, my dear. You must be Christine's daughter, June."
"Juniper, actually." No one had called me "June" since I was a child.
"Ah...yes, Juniper. You know, your mother and I were the best of friends, and I hope that you will think of me fondly as your guardian." Her light smile seemed to fit in graciously with her bright eyes.
"You look tired, Juniper, I should show you to your room. It was your mother's, and I rather think you'll enjoy your stay here with all of us."
My smile eagerly pushed itself upon my face as I took in all of the information. I would have a stable life, for once.
"I'll be right in; I just have to get a few suitcases of mine. Go in without me, please." I grinned at her, and she turned her body and walked back inside of the building.
I suddenly felt a brief sense of déjà vu. Why did this encounter seem so familiar? I had never met this woman before, but I felt as if I had been living here for weeks.
As I turned my body to the carriage, lying on top of my suitcase was a single red rose.
I turned to find the source of this present, but no one was around me, not even the carriage driver.
I stared at the rose and immense joy filled my lungs as I breathed in its fragrance. It was beautiful. Heartbreakingly beautiful.
Phantoms POV:
I set her free of me and my horrible fate.
I still love her, even to this day.
I am a mortal now and will soon die, but I will die knowing that this girl's life was exceedingly better for not knowing me.
I am a magician, you know. I can make anything and anyone disappear, even myself.
The End
