Chapter 12: Stranger Than You Dreamt It
I was in a field of clouds. The warm sun was beating on my icy skin.
This was heaven.
I stood up from my sitting position and walked toward a ladder that was set up in the middle of the field. I felt as if I were meant to climb it. As I took each step with careful precision, my heavy heart was slowly leaving my chest. I took a deep breath and continued onward.
I had reached the top step and no sooner than I had blinked, a lasso fell from the sky and secured its body around my neck. A man in the clearing ran toward me, his brown hair dancing in the wind.
As he grabbed a pocketknife, he cut the rope from my neck and pulled my body to the ground.
It was Erik!
His naked face was no more than the face of an angel! Each callous and hanging flesh that I had remembered was now covered with fair, soft and smooth skin.
This was surely heaven.
Heaven never lasts long, though; for as soon as happiness reached my lips, hell began to tear at my eyelids, forcing me to awaken myself to reality.
"Juniper! Juniper, please awaken! Please! I love you, June!"
His voice seemed to grab ahold of my spirit and push me out of my dream. As my eyes opened, his lips locked onto my cheek. The motion was sincere, but a burning sensation flickered through my body from his gentle touch.
The agony was excruciatingly horrifying that my eyes widened, searching for his response.
"Juniper, the fire consumed everything. Meg is nowhere to be found, but you're...safe." He hesitatingly spoke the word "safe" as if it meant something different to him.
"It...burns" I managed to speak as he grabbed more gauze and laid them across my aching cheek.
"The fire reached your face, but I extinguished it before it could...damage your whole complexion."
My heart sank. "Damaged?"
He crawled to a box of knick-knacks and pulled out a small mirror. Handing it to me with care, he walked away and left me to my thoughts.
As I lifted the reflection to my eyes, the mirror dropped, and I screamed.
Running to my side, he tried to calm me down. "Please, Juniper! It could have been much worse!"
The mirror's image was ugly and terrifying. I would have said that it "was not my face," but only half was deformed. Across the border of my previous face, stood an unwelcomed visitor. My flesh was bubbling and swelling as I screamed in horror. How could it have been much worse?
Now there was no doubt in my mind that I was his daughter...we both shared the mark of destruction upon our surfaces.
