Chapter 11: Once Upon Another Time

I wanted to flee with the phantom; I no longer wished to pretend as if I would have any kind of normal life at the Opera Populaire. Stability was never a part of my world. I wanted music.

The voices in my head, his voice, thundered its rebellious thoughts and spoke of the freedom, music...and love that he could provide me...so long as I left with him. Leave with him, and betray Meg.

I couldn't understand why she hated him passionately, but I knew it had something to do with my mother.

Meg was gone for forty minutes; enough time for me to escape with him. As I waited for her to return, he waited beside me. We sat in complete silence as his only movement was to brush the faint strays of hair from my cheek. I wanted to touch his face, his whole face, but retrieved my hand as it wandered to his mask.

                "Juniper, I must go."

My heart broke as he shifted his weight to the other side of the bed. He gave me one last smile and, with as much evasiveness as soap, slithered through Meg's closet.

What was happening? What he letting me go?

I matched each step with the beat of my heart and reached the doors of the closet.

"Erik!" I screamed, but no one replied.

My lips began to tingle; I had never said his name out loud before. I didn't like to call him "Erik," it made him sound so...human, which he absolutely was not.

My heart broke even more as I realized that he was gone. And as my heart broke, tears were released from my eyes and sifted through my petticoat. Suddenly, and quite rivetingly, a pair of hands spun my figure around and carried me. I am sure that I had fainted, for my mind fell into a pit of darkness.

No, I was awake, smiling crazily as Erik carried me off to his dwelling.

Goodbye Meg, farewell light.

We had been traveling down, down, down until his body abruptly stopped.

                "What is wrong, Erik?"

He set me down on the floor and told me to "Be silent" as he marched off to his room, his cave.

I took this chance to glance around his home. I had never seen the inside of a cave before. Although the dark consumed every corner, the upholstery consisted of bright colors. Various paintings and sketches were tacked on the walls, but were the same messy drawing of a woman's face.

I tried to keep my body low to the ground, so he wouldn't see my defiance, but every item in this room sent my body jumping from each wall to the next. I felt like a child who had constantly been told to not "touch anything," but had been delivered to a room where no adults were found.

I touched each vase, piece of carpet, and each charcoal sketch, only to wipe the black sod onto my gown.

A woman's voice screamed as Erik rushed to my side, picking my excited body off of the ground.

"She is absolutely mad! We can't go back there!" His eyes were pained, but shook off the weakness as he looked grimly at me.
