~Chapter Two~

~Meanwhile in Joseph's tower~
Kars was out this morning so Joseph decided to play a game of hide and seek with his pet chameleon, Smokey. He kept winning even with Smokey's camoflauge abilities. After finding him on the window sill and telling him that they can't go outside because it was a bad place. He jumped down and ran off to get his chores for the day started.

As he ran at least eighty feet of beautiful golden hair trailed behind him. Within an hour and a half he had finished everything he could possibly do in his tower. He decided to find a blank space on the wall to paint. He was rather good at painting from all the years of practice.

He painted himself visiting the beautiful rainbow lights that appeared every year on his birthday. He hoped that his father would let him go since he was turning eighteen this year. He really didn't want to stay locked up in this tower anymore, no matter what he told Smokey.

He wanted to get out into the world and meet people and make friends. He wanted to fall in love with someone who loved him. Most of all, he wanted to see the rainbow lights. They were so mysterious and beautiful. He just had to know.

He finished his painting and put his supplies away after cleaning up. He was so bored!! He started to reach for an apple when he heard a familiar call, "Joseph, let down your hair!" "Alright Smokey, today is the day, I'm going to ask him to take me to the lights!" "Joseph! What is taking so long? I'm not getting any younger down here!" "Coming father!"

As Joseph sent his hair down and started to pull Kars up, he turned back to Smokey, "If he says no, I'll demand it!!" Smokey gave him an unimpressed look as he hid away. Joseph shot him a glare as he pulled Kars through the window.

"Hello child. You impress me so much, how you manage to pull me up every day must be so tiring," Kars practically purred. "Oh! It's nothing father!" "Then why does it take so long?" Joseph had nothing to say. His father always made him feel like he wasn't doing anything right. He was used to it by now, but it still hurt sometimes.

Especially when he insulted him personally, he seemed like he didn't care unless it had to do with his hair or if he felt tired. He wished that his father would treat him as an equal, instead of a delicate child that knew nothing. He sometimes dreamed about what would happen if he tried to defy him.

He had tried it once, years ago, when he was younger. It was over something small and stupid, but he had gotten really angry and blew up at his father. Kars was so enraged that he ended up punching him in the face multiple times. That got him to shut up real fast.

Kars had apologized numerous times afterward, even going so far as to beg on his knees for forgiveness. He kept telling him things like how 'he needed him', or how he'd 'never hurt him again'. Joseph felt so bad that he had made him so upset that he had forgiven him almost right away.

The punches had taken two weeks to heal. One had broken his nose and swollen up really badly. They also resulted in major bruising and scars. He was just glad that Kars knew how to care for a broken nose, otherwise it might have ended up crooked or something.

After that a few other incidents occured. The few times it had happened were made up for in the severity of the injuries he sustained. Each time Kars was forgiven because he felt so guilty for driving the man so far that he snapped. The scars still remained as a harsh reminder not to press too much. He was suddenly broken out of his thoughts by Kars voice.

"Joseph, I'm talking to you. Are you listening?" "Huh? Oh yeah! Sorry father, I was just lost in thought is all! What were you saying?" "I said, I'm making soup tonight, can you go get the noodles I bought last week out of the cupboard. Honestly Joseph, you would think I'm speaking a different language sometimes!" "Right sorry, I'll get them now,"

As he hurried off to get the noodles he thought to himself, "Alright Joseph, you can do this. Casually slide the lights into the conversation, then ask him, no, demand that he either take you or let you go!" His thoughts sounded defiant and strong, he doubted they would sound like that if he tried to force the words out of his mouth.

He slid back into the kitchen and put the noodles into the already boiling soup pot. In the corner Kars was standing in a full body length mirror checking his reflection for any imperfections anywhere on his body. It was his daily ritual, everyday he went out to check around the woods that surrounded the tower or gather supplies. When he came back he always, made Joseph sing to him.

Then he would tell him how bad people outside the tower would love to have his power. He told him people would do horrible things to him to be able to heal themselves with his hair. He told him how he would never let that happen as he brushed and stroked his hair.

It always weirded him out when he did that, he never said anything though. He felt Kars was talking to his hair rather than him as a person. He never did say anything though. Even though Kars rarely hurt him physically, he was still scared. He didn't want to upset him to the point of physical force.

Kars pulled him over to the mirror and told him all the minor quirks in Joseph's attire. As soon as he finished Joseph started to speak. "So father I-" "Joseph, boy, I'm feeling a little run down. Would you be a good boy and sing to me?" "Sure" Joseph quickly grabbed a chair that he shoved his father into as he ran around the room grabbing a footstool to sit on and a brush.

He shoved the brush into Kars' hand, sat down and started singing quickly. "Flowergleamandglow letyourpowershine maketheclockreverse bringbackwhatoncewasmine healwhathasbeenhurt changethefatesdesign savewhathasbeenlost bringbackwhatoncewasmine whatoncewasmine"
A golden surge of power crashed into Kars making his hair fly up. Any trace of grey in his hair, sunspots, or wrinkles all vanished. With a vaguely annoyed face Kars looked up and opened his mouth to speak. Joseph cut him off before any sound could come out.

"SO FATHer, as you know, my birthday is going to be in a few days an-" "Ah-ah, I distinctly remember your birthday was last year," "Well, that's the thing about birthdays, they come every year. On the same day every year," Oops, that was a bit sassy.

Kars merely raised an eyebrow, "Oh yes, how could I forget?" Joseph gave a nervous chuckle. "Anyway father, the reason I brought this up is because I know what I want for my birthday this year," "Oh, and do tell, whatever could that be child?" "Well as you know, this year I'm turning 18, I was hoping that you would possibly letmegoseethecoloredlights,"

"Joseph, what have I said about mumbling? Hmm?" "You've told me that you can't stand it and that any respectable person would never mumble," with an ashamed look Joseph looked at his feet. "That's right, so say whatever you just said clearly so I can understand what you are mindlessly rambling about this time."

Joseph cleared his throat, "Father, since I am turning 18 this year, I was hoping you would let me go see the colored lights," Kars gave him a neutral face that broke into a small smirk. "You mean the stars. They are really nothing special child," Joseph got excited and launched into an explanation about how they weren't stars.
