Ch 9: Away again

It was late morning when Amicia and Lucas set off from the chateau. As the days were becoming shorter and shorter, the rat's activity increased. That's why nobody wanted to risk their life by leaving the safe castle zone before the sunrise.

Lucas left a few jars with potions to ease the pain and other symptoms of Hugo's illness.

"These are simple herb brews so they won't work miracles. " the young alchemist explained "but it's better than nothing."

"I hope that you'll find the potion that you were speaking of. " Rodric said and glanced at Hugo who was still sleeping by the fireplace "It breaks my heart to see the little guy in such a state."

So far silent Amicia finally spoke up.

"We'll do our best. " she said weakly.

Melie noticed dark circles under Amicia's eyes. It was clear that the girl didn't get much sleep. It seemed like the fear of going back to her family's house...or rather what was left of it...was eating her from the inside.

"I could help you" Melie thought "If you only let me, I would do anything to make you smile again."

Although it hurt Melie to see Amicia in poor condition, she understood the need to be left alone with some problems. The girl will come to her when she will be ready.

Not wanting to force herself on Amicia, Melie simply said "Take care. "

"You too" Amicia send her a weak simile and then, to Melie's surprise, grabbed her hand and pulled away from the rest.

They stood behind the wall and when Amicia was sure that nobody could see them...she embraced her tightly.

Melie felt how Amicia's body started shaking, she felt something wet on her shoulder. Before she had a chance to ask what had happened, Amicia said "I really wish it was over. I wish I didn't have to go there. I wish my brother was alright. I wish we could be together." She moved back and quickly wiped her face with a sleeve. She was crying.

"But I have to go. " she said sadly "So please wait for me."

Melie, who wasn't used to see people being so open about their emotions, needed a second to process what just happened.

"I'll be here when you come back. " she said finally "Don't worry about that. Better worry about Hugo. "

Amicia nodded "You were right. "

"Hm? "

"Back then you said that we sometimes don't realize how much we care about our brothers...and you were right. Too bad that I understood that so late."

The first few hours after Lucas and Amicia left, went very smoothly. Arthur started wandering around the castle, looking for something valuable, Rodric was checking out the local blacksmith station and Melie finally got something to eat.

And then it happened.

A single word that foretold the disaster.

"Amicia?" Hugo whispered

"Oh you're awake" Melie said "Amcica went with Lucas to find a potion for your illness."

And that was a mistake.

"AMICIA LEFT ME?! " Hugo thought and let out a loudest, high pitched scream that Meie had ever heard.

"Hey! Hey! It's alright! " Melie tried to calm him down but it was too late.
