That morning Melie set off to the city to find her brother. Amicia went with her to find a special alchemist book that would help her cure Hugo.
^^^
~a few hours later, near the city~
"If you want to put them down" Melie advised "Hit them between the legs."
"Wouldn't the head be quicker?"
"Oh, you're waaay too soft." Melie chuckled
When they were at the edge of the forest, Amicia stopped and picked up a flower.
"We're going to do a burglary" Melie crossed her arms "NOT go on a fancy banquet."
"I know but Hugo likes to put flowers in my hair so maybe this will cheer him a little." she put a violet flower in her hair and picked up another one. "Here" she moved closer "Lemme put one in your hair too."
"Emm...I don't think my hair are capable of being fancy and all."
"What are you saying?" Amicia giggled "You have amazing hair! See?" she said putting a lavender behind her headband.
"T-Thanks." Meie mumbled
"They remind me of fire." Amicia stroked her red hair gently "The fire that protects us from the rats, and gives us warmth..." she realized she started daydreaming so she moved back.
On their way to the city gate, the girls noticed a huge crowd of people in the distance.
"They're running away from the plague." Melie said
"And where's the plague there's also the Inquisition." Amicia added
"Aren't you smart." Melie smirked. Unfortunately, her good mood didn't last for long.
Next to a back gate were stanging stocks with a dead body inside. Suddenly all the color drained from Melie's face. SHE KNEW THAT MAN!
"From all these bastards...why it had to be you, Norman?" she whispered
"You knew him?" Amicia approached the stocks
"He was one of the first people we worked with after running away from home. He thought us...a lot to be honest. He wasn't much older than us...but he helped us survive those first weeks..." her voice started shaking "he was very gifted and didn't deserve to end up like this."
Amicia put her hand on Melie's shoulder to comfort her but the girl stepped away. She cleared her throat and simply said "Let's go!"
The red-haired girl quickly got rid of the lock in the door and opened it wide.
"Et Voila." she whispered "Be careful up there."
"You too." Amicia looked at Melie "Will we see each other again?"
"I hope so. You owe me...Plus we need to finish that wine bottle."
"Sure thing." Amicia winked at her and disappeared behind the door.
Melie closed her eyes and exhaled. It was time for some serious work.
'Focus!' she ordered herself 'You'll think about her when this hell will be over.'
Amicia's path was longer and more difficult than hers but Melie didn't felt confident in her situation. Unlike the other girl, she had small chances in a fight against a knight, plus she didn't know in what condition Arthur was.
'I hope he will be able to run.' she thought
^^^
The path to the prison was packed with guards but Melie easily blended into the crowd of fleeing citizens. The last street was empty but the guards were too busy looting the empty houses to notice the girl sneaking behind them.
Then she hid behind an abandoned merchant's cart.
'Shit' she thought as she looked closer at the prison. The place was heavily guarded.
Before she had a chance to come up with any plan, the Inquisition's man appeared out of nowhere. He was riding a horse so fast that he nearly ran over one of the guards.
"What's the meaning of this?!" the other guard asked angrily
The Inquisition's man jumped off the horse and tried to catch a breath "I'm bringing the orders from commander Dupain! The Grand Inquisitor is in danger and the University was set on fire! Commander demands to send there as many troops as you can!"
A few minutes later a large group of armed men left the building and followed the Inquisition's runner to the city center.
Melie couldn't even imagine a better course of events. With only 2 guards outside, she managed to run across the street and get into the prison building by the kitchen window. As she expected, they weren't many guards left inside the building, either. Hidden behind the corner, she peeked inside one of the corridors sighed from relief. In one of the prison cells, she noticed Arthur. He was standing by the wall which meant that was for sure alive. The only problem was that a guard was standing right in front of his cell.
She reached to the pocket and took out a rock. Earlier, Amicia made her search for the ammunition and she decided to save one rock for herself.
'It can't be that hard, Amicia does that all the time.' she thought.
The girl wanted to use the rock as a distraction but she clearly had a problem in doing things in a straight manner, throwing wasn't any exception, so the rock hit one of the cell bars, bounced off and hit the guard's eye. The man covered his face and began to squeal. The girl quickly knocked him out, this time by hand.
"Exactly as planned." The girl lied
"You're unbelievable." Arthur sighed
"I'll take it as a compliment."Melie approached her brother's cell and opened the lock. Usually, she would greet him with a sarcastic comment or mock him for getting caught but not this time...
The girl ran up to Arthur and embraced him tightly.
"Woah! What's the matter? It's not my first time behind the bars." He said but didn't step back.
'Yeah but this time could be your last.' Melie thought and by her brother's tight grip she knew that he was aware of that too.
"Let's get the fuck out of here." he said
^^^
The escape was very easy because the whole city was a huge mess. People were screaming and running away. The soldiers were trying to stop the massive fire coming from the city center...or fleeing as well. Thankfully Arthur could run normally so the twins were passing city gates in no time.
When they were finally safe in the nearby forest, Melie said "Arthur, I have to tell you something."
"Hm?"
"I've found Norman."
By the look on her face, he understood the rest. "How did he...you know?"
"Stocks."
"Not exactly the death he wanted." Arthur's voice cracked
"I know." She grabbed his hand and held tight. He didn't even try to act tough. They had lost a friend and it hurt.
^^^
When they were far enough from the city, they both knew what to do. Without words, Artur started collecting rocks and Melie was searching for two straight branches. They made an oval pile of the rocks and stuck a wooden cross at the end of it, making a simple grave. Even in such a wicked profession as thievery, there was room for a worthy burial.
"You know" Arthur said after a while "It got me thinking...life likes to place us in situations we would never have imagined ourselves in. A master of theft in simple stocks or that noble lady that I've met in the prison."
"What noble lady?"
"Beatrice De Rune."
