...FIVE YEARS LATER...

THIRD PERSON POV

A gravestone gradually came into view as brown boots slowly padded past a variety of marble plates decorated with the names of those we miss most, whether they were lost a hundred years ago or last week--their memory permeated the very ground she walked on. "Hi nana..." a small voice greeted as a single pink rose was delicately placed on the grass, "I've got good news." The brunette seemed to cheer, the miniature smile on her lips combating the tears stinging her eyes. "The sale finally went through on the house. And the couple were so sweet--they even had two little boys with them...finally, some kids back in there to explore all the little nooks and crannies.....The Doc even said I've made some big breakthroughs in therapy the past few months...I reckon it's only because you're on my shoulder in the sessions. Watching over me and helping me feel good--still looking out for me even after a year of peace...I also officially moved in with the Lynches last week--or, as you so lovingly called them, the 'Scoobies'," small laughs escaped her in a fondness of the past. Her nana's referral to her friends reminding her of her own nickname for them; her saviors...

The strange beginnings of friendship had developed into her new family--her lifeline after the chaos that was her life. Dr. Green's insistency to join the 'rainbow program' when she was inside seemed like a waste of time, and although art was a hobby she always adored becoming lost in, it seemed pointless during a time when all Scarlet wanted to do was drown in her grief. But if it weren't for that encouragement then she never would have met James, and if she hadn't been introduced to the Lynches than God knows where she'd be now...--And although the creation of her new family encouraged her progress and healing both mentally and physically, finally admitting she needed help five years ago was the biggest step she could take. Only doing that enabled her to again enjoy her hobbies, her family, her friends--all while reflecting on her past and her pain and why she felt the way she did. And of course, there are still days when she struggles...but it's all about the little steps that build towards the big picture; moving into a new home, getting a new job, sketching inanimate objects, or just getting out of bed in the morning...Each little step helps the healing process and enables our protagonist to live and feel alive once again...

"I miss you..." that same blinding smile looped through the brunette's lips as her grip delicately danced over her nana's necklace, "And I'd like to think you're proud of my little achievements--I mean, I can already picture you cheering me on no-matter how minuscule I consider those little victories...I love you so much. And I'll be back as soon as I can to fill you in on all of mine and the 'Scoobies' shenanigans...Bye nana....." The hood of the girls' jacket was tugged upward as she blew the wettening marble a kiss, footsteps denting the damp grass as gray clouds hovered overhead in the warning that change was coming...

-TIME SKIP-

"Honey, we're home!" the distant echo of Vanessa pulled Scarlet from her focus, the grip on her paintbrush loosening to the point of it slipping onto the plastic-covered flooring below. A grumble escaped the brunette, a mixture of annoyance and humor toward her roommates' actions. A small apron containing other essential brush types was unwrapped from the artist's waist and draped across a near stool, the petite girl escaping her bedroom to greet the new voice. "Hiya gorgeous," a passerby pecked her cheek--a burning red taking its place as the following siblings chuckled at their friend's reaction. "Guess what we bought."

The contents of three brown shopping bags were dumped onto the island; candy, chips, bottles of pop--a variety of junk food entered Scarlets' view and encouraged her to grin. "You do remember I'm not 10, right(?) I don't get so excited by sugar highs anymore(!)"
