CHAPTER 7

*Franz*

The bright light stung my eyes as it seemed to be coming from everywhere, not only the door. I felt Rose fidget in my arms. It was then that I realize I had unconsciously embraced and covered her when I thought there was an explosion from her side of the room. When the light died down, my eyes adjusted. I made out a figure of a man getting closer to us.

All of a sudden I felt an impact on my left cheek. In just a few milliseconds another fist connected to my right with a solid blow that I almost flew to another side of the place, away from Rose. Good thing she was not hit.

I felt a rocky ground, and my senses immediately alarmed me that we were no longer in the prison cell. The dampness of the atmosphere, the cool wind, rustling of leaves from nearby trees. I quickly scanned my surroundings, my eyes a blur. We weren't in prison anymore but in the middle of some unknown woods. And while I was still trying to collect my scattered thoughts to keep up, I heard swift footsteps toward my direction again and-

"Stop it!" I heard Rose scream. She was quick and was already standing between me and the man-her hands spread wide as if to cover me. When the man stopped still, she peeked at me.

"Franz, are you okay?" She asked as she hurried to my side and touched my cheek.

I clenched my fist and stood up but she was also fast and blocked me with her petite frame. "Franz, don't." I felt her gentle hand caressed my tight fingers until I let it go. I looked away from her eyes and stared at the muscular guy who looked like he was trying his best not to pounce on me. He was a little taller than me, his hair black, skin tan and eyes piercing with brownish red color. I tried to recall him from any encounter in the past. Zero. I have never seen this man. So I mapped his face in my memory.

"Are you okay?" He asked Rose, to my surprise, "Are you hurt?"

"Duncan, what are you doing?!" Rose hollered at him as she charged toward him, her eyes filled with anger. She apparently knew him. But her rage was small compared to his tall and muscular frame. Slowly, he walked to meet her, held her stiff arms and touched her cheek.

I raised my brow.

"Haci told me that someone was taking advantage of you. When he reported that the bug was gone, I had to call my dad for Rielle."

"So it was YOUR BUG?! Haci?! Rielle?!" Rose repeated, her eyebrows furrowed, her face gone bright red. "Where are they?!" She hollered.

Two heads peeked out from a nearby tree- a pale man whose eyes were concealed by large spectacles and a girl with long dark braided pigtails. Tears were dripping down the guy's small face.

Rose's annoyed expression intensified.

"I'm sorry for the bug. I know we could trust you, but when you left, it was the only thing we could do to keep us from worrying," the spectacled guy said, his head lowered and face all wet. He sniffed and blew his nose. Clasped in his hands was a small laptop that glowed inside.
