Chapter 13: Manhunt

The smell of grass and dirt was overpowering as sets of boots swiftly brushed through the fields filled with mud. The moon was high up the sky, and the rest of the world bled in sheer black.

Swiftly, figures breezed through like wind.

Somewhere in the dark, a strong calloused hand was raised high enough to be seen by the figures that tried to blend in the midnight black.

By impulse, the rest of the shadows haulted, and quietly retreated behind the tall sugarcane.

The hand belonged to a man of his late thirties. A tall guy with dark locks, pale skin and strong build with scars on his hands that were tested by time and rough circumstances. He tightened the sling of his M4 Assault rifle and glanced back at his team, as if to quietly command them to stand still, while the unyielding sound of cracking sticks filled the night and grew closer to them.

Captain Bron raised his index finger to his lips as he maintained eye contact with the others, silently commanding them to keep their mouths shut and ears hyper vigilant.

The sound of crackling leaves continued and grew closer. As it grew louder, the eleven-man team held their breaths behind the tall sugar cane.

As the sounds slowly turned out to be footsteps, Captain Bron crouched lower as his team followed his stance. The snapping twigs and footsteps grew louder and louder by the minute...

"Tsuk, tsuck, tsuck... TSUCK!"

Alas, a lost figure showed up and when the captain ensured that it was alone, he immediately signaled two men behind him. They jumped out of the hiding and grappled the stranger to the ground.

"Wait!!! Wait!!! Guys it's me! It's Grax!" The scrawny figure screamed.

"Tangina!" Bron cursed as everyone relaxed and stood up. "How many times did I have to tell you, do not wander out of the group! Observe tapping distance!"

"So sorry, I dropped my magazine far behind and tried to catch up," Grax, the petite guy mumbled as he dusted his shirt, " But I got lost among the banana trees." He scratched his head and smiled sheepishly, "On a good note, though, I got a chance to clear this area and for sure those two weren't here."

Bron looked back at his team and called a headcount.

He removed his hat and rubbed his face with it in frustration, "That's it for tonight."

It had been days since their manhunt operation started in search for two missing prisoners Franz and Ross, and still, there were no signs of the two. Both of their families have been contacted and no one seemed to cooperate.

The team was hungry and with little energy left as they sat in frustration in their van on their way back to the command center. The driver, who noticed everyone sleeping immediately called out, "Calling out a singing buddy please!"

Immediately, Seirin, the female medic, sung a tune.

"I wonder where those darn two are," Rodo, the driver mumbled under his breath.

"I sure hope this isn't just one of their darn schemes from the head office just to give us some work to do," Mullen, the driver's buddy, answered, "If I find out they're just doing this and just hiding those escapees to play on us I really am gonna-"

"Why don't you all just keep quiet. Anything you say here can affect our manhunt. The least I want is for the morale of our group to be crushed," the Captain sternly warned, his face under his hat. Everyone thought he was already asleep, apparently, he had been alert and listening, "If you have any new information on the matter, speak up."

Mullen slouched back on his seat, "Sir, yes, sir. I will tap some friends from the police intelligence."

"What you say can be true, but I sure pray it isn't the case. The places we've been going to are dangerous and it can't be taken as a joke. We shall all rest for tonight. By tomorrow, gather all intel you can," Bron said, more to himself. "For now, it's mission accomplished. We're all able to go back home safe to our families."

What's left in the night was the song Seirin tried to sing to keep the driver awake.
