CHAPTER 6

*Franz*

The room was awfully dark and silent as both of us anticipated each other's words.

"I'm in, Baby Doll," I answered even before my mind processed everything. In the silence that followed, I couldn't help but listen to my thoughts. They'll erase my memory of her? Is that even possible? Well, when I got in here, police have the slight of hand to plant evidence on clueless scapegoats like me, now they can even transport drugs in here through flying drones over the walls. And besides, it really isn't something to be surprised about if I think of what usually happens in this place.

"I see, much has changed in the outside now , too. They can even tweak people's minds, eh?" I said out loud.

"Yes," Rose answered and took a seat on the bed- her form now relaxed. She covered her face with both hands.

I looked at her from where I stood and took notice of her physique once again. Despite her pixie cut, she still looked very much like when we were teens. I remembered a time when we were studying at a cafe. She was giggling pretty hard when she found out I already remembered every detail our teacher said and that I compared it with what Google told me. I had cracked that Professor Chit should have a debate with Google and lose his job and he should just give way to other competent teachers. She joked that I should just take his job for being a smart ass but that my topics will always be about the green stuff because I was a master and obsessed about it. Her eyes twinkled then. She laughed easily at anything. And then after laughing, she pulled my chin and told me something for the nth time-her face serious yet still soft and serene, "Franz, you may think it's normal but you have an extraordinary gift. What's a breath of fresh air for you may be like walking on burning coal for others. You can be proud of your gift, but don't use it to put other people down. Treat it as a blessing. Use it to help those who lack it. Focus it on a dream and pour your energy into it." And she winked. "Okay, Mom," I joked.

But I wasn't even putting the effort to take note of everything she said, then. I knew it'll just be like a song that'll play at the background inside my head-like everything else... until I'll hear her remind me again. So I just smiled and kissed her without knowing it was the last time.

"Franz, you might lose your gift if you join us. Are you sure?" Rose finally said.

"Will I forget everything about you?"

She breathed, "You'll only lose fragments of your memory from the first day you saw me here in jail until the day I leave you. It'll be just like taking meth-"

"I wouldn't know. I've never taken meth."

"It'll be like you had black outs. We can arrange for you to have a concussion and you'll be escorted and treated in a hospital. When you come back here, you'll return to your usual routine before you met me."

"Sounds fun," I lied.

There was a slight indication that she was caught off-guard, but she stood up and walked back and forth, "And in exchange for your service in this covert operation, I will process your release from the outside," She was looking at thin air as if trying to read something invisible, her left thumb and middle finger gently snapping. "It will be a reward for your key role for this Special Operation! That's it!"
