Heather C POV
I stare at her, hoping she would leave on her own. I never know how to comfort people, whatever I say won't help."Are.. are you ok?" I ask, tentatively.
"I-.. came for, m- my uh, scrunchie, " She says, barely audible.
I look around the room, spotting it near the door. I walk over, pick it up, and hand it to her. Veronica looks up and takes it from my hand.
"Thanks, " She says while sniffling.
"So.. what happened?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.
Veronica doesn't answer, and stares at me, genuinely surprised that I'm being nice. I'm not nice, but I can't stand making Veronica feel worse.
I sigh and sit next to her.
We sit in silence for 5 minutes, not saying anything.
"I still don't forgive you, " I say, breaking the silence.
Veronica chuckles a little and gives me a tiny, bittersweet smile.
I can feel my cheeks heating up, and my heart beats faster. No, no, no, I frantically think to myself. I'm glad it's still dark, or else she would've noticed.
"Sorry for ruining your clothing. Again" She says,
I want to say something mean, maybe snap at her, give a witty remark, or threaten her. But, I realize I don't care anymore.
"I'll accept your apology, if-" I begin
"If what?" She asks, nervously.
"If.. you accompany me to the mall to buy another blazer."
"Are you asking me for a date?" Veronica says, mischievously.
My face is red as a tomato, but Veronica doesn't notice. I regain my composure.
"No, I just need somebody to carry my heavy bags, "
Veronica just nods and checks her phone.
"Shit, it's late, my parents are going to kill me."
She starts to leave, and I reach my arm out to tap her on the shoulder, to ask her to stay. But I stop.
"You know, you could just tell them you stayed with me," I blurt out, hoping she'll accept,
"That could work. " She agrees and gives me a brilliant smile.
I feel the corners of my own mouth lifting up.
