Theo had ended up leaving Barnes and Noble carrying seven new books, Jazzmine in tow with three more.
"You literally just," Jazzmine groaned as she unlocked and opened her car's back door, "spent ninety dollars on books. We were supposed to be shopping for clothes!"
The girls set the books on the seat, closed up the car, and headed back up to the mall. Guess this would be a bad time to ask to look at some art stuff too, Theo thought to herself.
"I'm sorry, Jazz. I didn't expect to see Shayne there! Nearly hit me like a wrecking ball when I saw him."
Before Jazzmine could start singing the song, Theo shushed her.
"It's fine. I'm only allowing it because Shayne is a hot piece of candy, hot tamale! I usually like my candy sweet, but I'd go for him any day--but not anytime soon, or at all, actually, because I love my boyfriend. He is the hottest tamale." Jazz straightened up and took a quick glance at her phone; it was a picture of her and Blake, her boyfriend, holding a pancake up between their faces with their lips. They both looked like fish, but it was honestly a really cute picture. Theo envied them. And was pretty surprised Jazzmine was all over him. She had never been commited to a guy as much as him--maybe he was the real deal for her.
Jazzmine stopped walking for a second, but quickly continued.
"Hm, Blake called me. Must have had my phone on silent." She typed a few things on her messages, then put her phone in her pocket. "We can go eat some pretzels and I'll call him then, then we'll pick you out some clothes, sound good?"
Theo grinned and nodded. "Yes, ma'am."
As Theo looked at the last casual dress she wanted, she asked Jazzmine about the phone call.
Jazzmine bit her lip and sighed. "He mentioned this to me a few days ago, too, but I guess it's official now. We--"
"You guys are getting married??" Theo nearly broke her jaw from how open her mouth was. Jazzmine busted out laughing and shook her head.
"No, it's only been a month. I'm not that quick, girl," She replied, "He just... Wants me to meet his parents soon."
"Well, that's good! Right?"
"Yes, but I'm so scared. They live in Colorado and have this little resort in the mountains, and they wanted to meet and see me there. For two weeks, Theo! They want to meet me for the first time, in a cabin, in the mountains, and they want us to be there for two weeks. I don't know if I haven't told you this yet, but I've never met them before, in my life!!" It looked like Jazzmine wanted to rip her hair out, and Theo sympathized.
"It is pretty darn early to live with someone you haven't even met before, for two weeks. No pressure, but you better give it your all and be yourself. Two weeks is a lot of time to worry about impressing someone, so please don't try too hard. Don't strain."
Jazzmine smiled real big, before sighing again. "But that's not even the worst part. He wants us to leave tomorrow. I guess the flight leaves at 2 pm."
Theo stepped back and furrowed her eyebrows. "That's so early! How did he get plane tickets so soon? Is there an emergency?"
"Well like I said before, he has mentioned it. I just didn't think too hard about it. And--and--to add more books to my stack," she glared jokingly, "apparently they have a surprise for me. This is all way too much, and I'm so nervous, and--"
"Hey, hey, you're gonna do great!" Theo grinned encouragingly. "You are the most easy-going, polite--when you want to be--, funny person I know! You are gonna nail them--it--er, you'll be fine!" The two laughed, then Jazzmine's mouth formed to a grateful smile.
"Thanks. Apparently I don't have to worry about any winter clothes," she gagged at the word winter, "because there are some pretty cheap shops at the resort, and his mom as extra. I'll probably be wearing one of his coats there."
"Well, cool! That's less for you to pack and you're settled... His parents sound so great, though. If they're anything like Blake, I'm sure you'll get along just fine with them."
Jazzmine smiled to the ground and nodded. "I sure hope so."
Before Theo could finally enter the dressing room, Jazzmine asked a question.
"Do you know what Shayne does for work? I mean, if you score with a garbage man--"
"What's wrong with dating a garbage man? Sure they're stinky, but they can still support themselves and then some. They make good money."
"Ugh, you're right, but seriously. Did you happen to ask, or at least check on his profile?"
Theo blushed in embarrassment and shook her head. For as built up and cautious as she was, she somehow managed to miss the whole 'inspection' thing. She felt dumb. Exposed to no one but herself, and even that felt like too much.
Jazz smiled knowingly and nodded. "All is well, young child. I will look for you and tell you all about it as you flaunt your stuff."
As Theo changed into cute outfits and casual dresses, Jazzmine fangirled over Shayne.
"He's an actor, Theo! He's famous!! I have to google him."
"Isn't it like bad luck to date an actor? It never turns out well." Theo asked.
"I think that only works if both partners are famous... Anyway, apparently he has only been in a couple of movies and shows, but he is a huge hit on this youtube channel called Smosh. They basically do a lot of funny acting skits, play games on another channel, and other various things on yet again another youtube channel."
Theo almost jumped out of the dress she was putting on when Jazz said Shayne was in Smosh. She definitely knew what Smosh was; when she was a teen, she had a huge crush on Ian--weird, right? Everyone else fangirled over Anthony, but she drooled over Ian. Maybe it was because she could relate to him--he was closed in, like her, but he still managed to be hilarious and outgoing. She could only strive to be as great as him.
"That's crazy, I used to love watching Smosh! I didn't know Shayne was in it, he must've joined in the last few years. Last time I watched them, I was nineteen!" Theo opened the door to the stall so she could show Jazzmine, and swirled.
"You cutie! If you haven't already, you're sure to win him over now!"
