Chapter Sixteen

I was pushed into a small room that was lit by a single lightbulb and handcuffed to a narrow and gray table. According to the police, a bystander contacted them after I shot the woman. The police from the next town arrived to the scene in less than five minutes and arrested me.

As much as I was not eager to be arrested and spend some time in jail, I did not mind being in custody. I had nothing to hide. This is the procedure that the police go through all the time when they make an arrest. They would put the pieces together, and I would be a free lady. Not only would my words be sufficient, but so would the video. What is that? You are wondering what video that I am referring to?

My writer never mentioned this in the last chapter, but while I was eavesdropping in the restroom, I was also recording the secret conversation. I had opened the stall door a crack and caught the mother speaking to her phone on video. If the police had trouble buying my story, the video on my phone would convince them otherwise.

In the little room where I was being held, the floor was a dark pink, and the walls were a dark blue. There were two iron chairs on either side of the table. I was sitting in one of them. Boy, it was freezing my bottom.

It felt like an eternity until an officer who was among the smartest and most respected officers in the station shuffled his way into the room and shut and locked the door behind him. He was clutching an object. It was my cellphone.

"I heard from some of my fellow officers that you wanted access to your phone during this session," he said as he strolled to the table and sat across from me. He yanked off his hat and set it next to him on the table and set my phone in the middle of the table. "Before we begin, I have a question that is irrelevant from the shooting. Why do you want your phone during this period?"

"There is evidence on there that will prove that I shot her to protect innocent lives."

"Are they pictures or videos? Or both?"

"No pictures. Just a video. A superb video."

"We will watch the video later. Right now, I would like you to tell me what led up to the shooting."

"I would be more than happy to. Where do you want me to start?"

"Start when you and your husband arrived to the hospital."

"Okay. Well, my husband - whose name is Caleb - and I would not have been at the hospital if not for my cousin."

"What is your cousin's name?"

"Destiny."

"And what does she have to do with this incident? Was she severely injured?"

"I wish that it was that simple. But nope. The three of us were at the hospital because we wanted to run a DNA test."

"What was the DNA test for?"

"Destiny claimed that she gave birth to Caleb's son long ago."

"How long ago?"

"I am not sure of the exact date. Anyway, Destiny said that she tricked Caleb into doing her bidding and got pregnant with his son. Caleb had no clue that he had another son until today! She took his son away from him without his consent."

"Let me stop you right there. Those are serious accusations that could land your cousin in jail. With your testimony and strong evidence, she could be in jail for fifteen years. Probably more."

"What about her son? What will happen to him?"

"Since that Caleb is the biological father, he can receive full custody if he wishes to keep the child."

This was the news that I needed. Destiny was not fit to be a mother, and even though that she claimed that she truly changed, she still needed to be held accountable for her choices. If Caleb would never receive justice against Ava, then Destiny would have to do the trick. The folks in Forlot should stop taking advantage of my cinnamon bun.

I continued on with my story and did not leave out any details. When I ended it with me shooting the woman, the officer announced that it was time to view the video. I got his permission to use my phone and picked it up and clicked on the camera app. I clicked on the video and pressed the play button. The officer took my phone and watched what was unfolding.

After it was over, I said, "I tried to warn ya. She and her boss are murderers. They are out to kill the baby and anyone who is a threat to them. They desire to murder me and Caleb in cold blood."

He nodded and drummed his fingers on the table. "This will be good enough to put her in jail until a trial has been arranged. We will open up an investigation and hopefully track down whoever is in charge of this operation."

"Does this mean that I am free to go?"

"Yes, you are." He pulled a small key out of his pocket and opened the handcuff. It was then that his radio buzzed in his other pocket. He excused himself and disappeared from the room.

I slid my hand away from the handcuff and gave my wrist a nice massage. What was going wrong with my day was now going right. Destiny would be charged for what she did to Caleb and not see her son for a very long time. As for the mom, she would be charged with attempted murder, and her daughter would be placed in an orphanage. The poor baby. She deserved to have a mom and dad. All children do.

The officer returned and had a stern expression on his face. "The woman whom you shot died. But she did not die from the gunshot wound."
